Does anyone remember the website that lets you grab a pictures address and when somebody views the picture it emails the IP to an E-Mail account?

Basically I need a way to get somebody's IP. I have a friend who says somebody uses all his accounts, besides his banking account, and just fucks around with them. He has ruled out anyone on a local network.

So any other suggestions would be great.

I don't understand your first question, because stuff like banking accounts are managed on offsite servers, so you can't install anything on their end...

My suggestion is your friend change every password and secret question to something complex. Also make sure anytime you're submitting a password, it's done over a secure connection.

Might also want to check for spyware on the computer.

Your friend needs to clean up his computer ( ie: get rid of all the spyware and crap ), and change his online log ins.

I'm not saying who ever is doing this doesn't deserve to catch hell for it, I'm just saying you probably won't be able to catch him. And anyway, the first priority is to get him/her out of your system and cut off his access to your friend's personal details.

Yeah I know, he wants an IP. I can clean him up but he is hell bent on catchin the guys. I think they have a trojan on his comuter or soemthing. I don't know, he can't explain things very well.

What XOR said..
what happens when the IP is from China, Indonesia, or Malaysia?

plan of action:
Change all system and online accounts/passwords
Clean up the system
Fully patch the system
Run/Enable a firewall
Run/Enable an up to date antivirus.

get back to having fun...
plotting revenge is not healthy

What exactly is he going to do with an IP?

A) Report it to [email protected] which will never respond
B) Launch his own futile attack against the person
C) Tell his firewall to block the IP, which will change 10 minutes later once the guy figures it out
D) Report it to law enforcement who will likely do nothing about it

Oh, and nevermind that none of the above will do any good considering that whoever *might* have access to your buddy's PC is probably getting his data through a zombified machine owned by a 65yr old grandfather who had no idea that his grandkids were using Napster.

Your friend just needs to clean up his PC, stop surfing porn sites (or surf them with something other than IE), get some good AV/Spyware software, and a LOT of common sense.

I'm not sure of the website you are talking about, however if you have a web server, and have access to the logs you could get his IP faily easily if you can get him to view a image hosted on that server. However if he is using a proxy server it won't be of much use.

So if this guy has access to your friends email account you could sent a email that says something like "Account history" or something to try to lure him him to clicking the email. Inside you coud embed a little 1x1 pixel .jpg. If he clicks the link to the message the html embedded image will be downloaded, and at that point you can check your access logs to see what IP grabbed the file.

Obviously there are ways to get around it, but thats the closest thing I can suggst you your question.

But as others have said. What are you going to do with the IP address?

a drive by?
:p

sry...couldn't resist...
but yeah...the IP will net you next to nothing. Identity theft isn't even a felony as far as I know. Some lady at my office had her ID stolen last year and about $15k racked up on a few credit cards. They caught the people doing it (b/c they were apparently doing it to a couple hundred people) and were apparently only charged with mis-demeanor charges, even though they siphoned enough cash from those people to purchase to brand new Mercedes and a decent house.
