I have an ASUS VG236 (120Hz) monitor that is also 3D. I hardly use the 3D aspect of it. How do I optimzie this monitor to look sharper? text doesn't look good as a macbook pro retina. I may sell this monitor - where can I get a sharp looking monitor? 23" budget $300

Perhaps I should get an IPS?

Aside from using microsoft ClearType Text Tuner (Go to run, then type cttune.exe), you really can't improve a monitor's text sharpness. I'm also not sure if theres currently any desktop monitors smaller than 27 that have a higher resolution than 1920x1200

^ Having said that, which monitors should I get to get that "retina" feel? I want a 23" - it can be 1920x1200

Of course the mac book retina will look sharper, it's a much higher resolution than your 1920x1080 screen...

interesting how a retina 13" display looks better than any Pc monitor on the market

It's not interesting, it's obvious. There are dozens of laptop screens with higher ppi (pixels per inch) than any mainstream desktop monitor, the mac high ppi displays included. There are dozens of tablets and phones with higher ppi as well.

The highest ppi desktop monitors you can get are the 27" 1920x1440 monitor and some rare 22" 1920x1200 monitors. Some of the Korean 27" monitors are available near the $300 price point.

You sit further away from a desktop monitor than a laptop or mobile device, so the relative effects of lower ppi are smaller. In any case, join the wait on higher ppi (4K) desktop panels.

Your 23" 1920x1080 display has 9,176 pixels per square inch. Apple's 13" 2560x1600 display has 53,944 pixels per square inch. That's almost six times as many pixels in the same area. (See this comparison.)

All of the current desktop monitors with 2560x1600 are 30". What the 30" puts into over 400 square pixels, the 13" Retina puts into 75 square inches. (See this comparison.)

On a $300 budget, I don't think you get any sharper than you already have.

Thanks for the overview. Can I get a 27" with that resolution and quality?

No. A 27" panel with the ppi of the 13" macbook panel would have a resolution of 5120x3200. Even the next generation of high resolution panels (4K or "ultra-hd") is going to have significantly fewer pixels than that.

so basically I cannot find a screen on the market or anytime soon with "retina" quality without switching to an overpriced mac?

None of the monitor manufacturers are even slightly interested in improving dpi quality for monitors.
