Hi all,

I have a rig I built myself that is about 2 years old that never gave me any problems. Lately, on rare occasion, when I turn on my machine, the hard drive takes a while to spin-up. It takes so long that the motherboard times out looking for it. I've tried swapping hard drives and my power supply is more than ample (350w, but I don't have much on the system). Does anyone know what it could be?

It may be possible that the HD may be on its way out. Full backups enable you to simply reload data if you need a new one.

This is not necessarily an indication of pending failure. Plenty of drives do this periodically, some permanently. As long as you can set your BIOS spin-up time to compensate you're fine. FYI that BIOS option delays detection by X number of seconds so the drive won't be timed out by the controller.
