Good gaming laptop for around $1k

I don't really know much about gaming laptops, so I'm looking for some help here. My friend is looking to buy the best gaming laptop for his money for around $1k. For that amount of money, what cpu/gpu would be recommended for this price range? He's also looking to get a 17" screen.
