Performance is exactly where it was presumed to be.

Yes...yes...a super of a deal. One year too late. I'm having flashbacks to the Turing cards.

You only need one so if you have one card already you only need one unless it's a Fermi or something.

20 series, now 40 series. "Super" means "What the cards should have been at launch".

Nvidia only refreshes their unpopular cards to try and clear stock.
Anybody buying these will feel like a dunce when Blackwell launches in Q4.

I’m not defending the release ,refresh and release crap we get in the GPU space but if anyone is buying a new retail card may as well get the latest version of it. Makes sense for new builds I guess. Or maybe someone who held a 1080ti all the way to Raptor or Zen 5…
However
$600 for 12Gigs of vram in 2024 is pretty ridiculous to me still.

Why? In Q4 it'll be the RTX 5090. The 5070 probably won't release until next year. That's plenty of gaming time for this class of a card.
Exactly this. It's a good deal for this time.

Also, what if someone's needing a card for a new build or an old one's upgrade now? Is the idea they should wait a year eternally because there's always something new on the horizon?

when the 5000 series comes out the same people will say don't buy it because the 5000 Super is coming out in 1 year...then the 6000 series and on and on...you should buy a GPU when you need one...the people that are anti-4000 Super are the people that already have a 30 or 40 series GPU...most people don't upgrade every single generation...I try to only upgrade every other gen

I'm debating getting a 4070 Ti Super only because of path tracing...if course it'll be better to wait for the 5000 series...but then you'll be stuck in a cycle of perpetual waiting for the next big release...why buy anything if you know something better will eventually replace it?

Nah I've learned my lesson. With nvidia especially you want to sell your cards a full month prior to release at least. Throw your backup card in and wait till launch. The sell value difference after launch from before and after is huge. I can actually profit off my 4090 after having it for over a year and I doubt that changes much leading up to Q4.

I did that for the 3080 launch and it screwed me over big time lol.

Not impressed with the 4070 Super, better than the regular 4070 which is still overpriced. The 4070 Super brings nothing to the table in performance/buck compared to what was already available from last gen AMD parts. The 4070 regular price should have been reduced to at least MSRP of the 7800 XT while still being a slower performer overall. I just don't see Nvidia picking up sells with the Super to a significant degree. 12 gb is also short for a $600 card with apparent limitations.

Agreed that at $600 and up I expect at least 16GB of VRAM, but that shortcoming doesn't seem to be holding it back (yet?). In Techspot/HUB's 4K tests, its spot in the rankings vs 1080P and 1440P is virtually unchanged.

Armchair versus reality.

My 4070 Super was ordered from NVIDIA on launch day early afternoon and it still hasn’t shipped. Payment processed successfully day 1. Wonder if they just took orders. Chat rep was no help.

EDIT: just got ship notification

I plan on picking up a 4060 for $299 at Microcenter soon to hold me over as I have no GPU currently. I was going to get a 4080 super but I need a downpayment for a car too
Of course I "plan" on picking up a 5090 at launch.

Great call. The RTX 4060 is a little beast (have a laptop powered by one) - keep an eye out for open box ones you can get into the mid $200s if you're willing.

Laptop GPUs are always quite a bit weaker than the desktop cards of the same name. So, you should be even more impressed by the desktop version!

Except the RTX 4060 Laptop. Its the same as the desktop.

That said, laptop brands can spec the final performance of their laptops wildly. One would need to check reviews to make sure they are getting a laptop which maximizes the mobile GPU. TDP limits, bios limits on boost clocks, poor cooling, less aggressive power delivery, etc. The MSI in this review seems pretty good. Although, something is a little off. Limited power delivery and or poor cooling of the CPU or something, causing it to not perform as well as the desktop version.

I saw a few 4090's available at my local Micro Center (NYC)...was tempted...would not need a 40 Super or even a 5000 series at that point (I'm at 1440p 165hz)...24GB VRAM would last a long time
