I hate running firewall software on my own PC, chewing up very necessary CPU cycles.

Here's a few "real" firewall solutions that use Linux or a derivative of that can sit between your broadband connection and your home network (or PC). These solutions work great on older PCs, like Pentium 100 or better, 32MB ram or better, 100MB hard disk or better.

1. IP-COP (5-Star) - http://www.ipcop.org

2. SmoothWall (4-Star) - http://www.smoothwall.org/

3. MonoWall (4-Star) - http://m0n0.ch/wall/

If anyone knows of any other good firewall that is free, please post!

run linux, and set up iptables.. free, easy, and runs on a 486.. shit, you can find distro's of linux that fit on floppies, that will do the job.. do a search for a linux router on a floppy on google, and you'll turn up some options..

much better to go the *nix route, since there's not really many xploits flying around the net that would take them down as much as a windows box using some free firewall software..

try going to www.computergeeks.com and looking for a NAT router (even a refurb one). they are good firewalls, to be honest, all a home user needs.

FREESCO! (As mentioned breifly in a few posts earlier). if you have a 386, with 7mb of ram, a floppy drive, and a NIC then your ready to have a firewall.

Go install ZoneAlarm and egnore the [H]. You clearly don't need our help, and we sure as hell don't need your attitude.

Here's a tip: When you ask for help, and people are actually kind enough to give it, do not spit in their face. You asked about firewalls, and you got a lot of different answers. Try thanking people. Because I can guarantee you, there are a few people ( myself included ) who will not be offering our help in the future, due to your attitude.

or since im pissed off right now
learn to either
a) search: there are probably 100 threads on firewalls for windows in the last months post count
b) if search happened to be broken, then you could have at least learned to read the first days thread listings. There were 3 threads going on for the last several days that had firewall in the title.

dont come here and ask for our help and then not respect what people so graciously offer here...especially if you don't do your own homework and do a little googling or searching or at least reading through 5 other threads first.

If you don't want everyones opinion, then learn how to ask a question properly.
