Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (FF7 Remake Part 2)

Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is 'nearly 100 hours' long, says director

Is this the new trend.. Split games into parts and charge MAX price per part? lol.

I really hope their financial woes contributes to an earlier PC port. A 6 month delay like Death Stranding had wouldn't be so bad, but I fully expect a 1-2 year wait.

I do wonder about the openness of it. Might kill what I found enjoyable about Remake in that it was chapter based. Though I am still looking forward to it. 100 hours is massive.

Edit: May come as early as May 30th. Of course it can come later, but I don't think they would have put that date if they didn't intend on it coming to PC shortly after.

A lot of the games I was really interested in (Horizon Forbidden West, Rebirth, STALKER 2) all got pushed to next year, and will likely all come out around the same time.

that's a strange way they worded it- "not available on other formats until at least 5/29/24"...does that mean it's a 3-month exclusivity?...why even bother putting that May date if it was going to be a 12-month exclusivity?...sounds like the exclusivity period is going to be pretty short this time

Forbidden West is rumored to be coming to PC very soon

They shouldn't even put the date there if they don't already have other platforms in development. They did the 6 month thing with FF16 and the game director was surprised when people were asking him about other platforms in the weeks leading up to release. If they never had any plans to release on other platforms then they shouldn't be putting on that date in marketing material, period.

Remake ended up feeling like it’s own complete game, more akin to the first part of a trilogy than anything else. Rebirth is already looking to be even bigger and with a ton of stuff to do. Even with some events being shuffled around, with where the devs have said the game will end its going to contain a shit load of content.

My assumption is they are working on it. It does seem like the newest FF game didn't sell as well as they had hoped, Remake sold more copies in a shorter time frame. Perhaps they moved up the PC release as they will try and maximize sales for Rebirth. Or they could just have incompetent marketing.

Rebirth is also likely still using UE4 which likely works better on PC than FF16's engine, which I believe is a new version of the trash used on FF15 & Forspoken. I can see them porting over Rebirth more easily and quickly. FF16 will probably come winter 2024 or later if Rebirth lands in spring/summer 2024. Just my assumption on things. Rebirth seems to wanted more, and will likely sell more which Square needs.

FF16 runs on a forked version of the FF14 engine (Crystal Tools), which runs very well on PC. FF15 and Forspoken are the only two games to have used the Luminous Engine. In a presentation it's stated that UE4 was used in pre-alpha testing, but they decided to extend Crystal Tools with physically-based rendering instead for the final project.

No doubt Rebirth is still using UE4. They probably don't want to spend time updating their tooling to UE5 for the sequel. I imagine the turnaround time on the sequel would have been a lot longer than 3.8 years, which includes COVID-19, if they did.

The lack of dynamic shadows and ambient occlusion in FFXVI is pretty damn noticeable IMO.
Crazy particle effects everywhere, but it all feels pretty static. I think Ray tracing would do the title a phenomenal job, but also be hell to run.

16 meet their general expectations but they were hopping for more. Them expecting more was rather foolish without putting the game onto more platforms. It had a pretty solid attach rate on the PS5, but it was never going to pull Remake numbers.

I doubt they pushed up the PC release of Rebirth. That would require completely renegotiating their exclusivity contract with Sony and likely paying a ton of money. I would imagine that the short exclusivity window was figured out a while ago. Perhaps in light of all the other high profile failures SE has had these last few years.

Which is too bad. The newest UE5 would help with the open world that this seems to feature. UE4 struggles on open world games. It works well in areas with smaller playable spaces like Atomic Heart. Though the quick turn around time is nice.

I assume so as well. Clearly whatever Sony is paying isn't worth as much as selling the game on multiple platforms. Xbox is probably not going to happen but planning a quicker release date for the PC release probably made some sense. I think FF15 sold better than Remake as well although they also put it on Xbox.

Can't wait for this to come to PC.

Played Remake on PS4 but haven't tried Intergrade yet since no PS5 and it's like $50 on PC.

But Rebirth looks like everything fans wanted actually coming true. By the trailer and gameplay so far, I'm shocked.

Is there a thread for the first part? I'm curious what people thought of it because it's one of the few gamed I've ever quit playing. I didn't find really anything redeeming about it TBH, the game felt like it should be 8-9 hours long but just got stretched into a slog of tedious combat, poor dialogue, lengthened dungeons that were long a dull. The side quests are all uninspired fetch quests. The game play is the worst of all worlds. It wants to be an action game, but doesn't really act like one. When I hit something it's not really responsive either. Just couldn't finish the game, I'm about 15 hours in and I'm just trying to figure out what people like about it. I wish they had done an actual remake of the original with more polished turn based game play. I want to like it because of nostalgia but it just isn't fun, especially after playing an actual action game like GOW.

all of Japan's creativity has been diverted to porn games these days. also that's what happens when you stretch out an already long game that has only two interesting characters (Cloud and Seph).

FF6 lore deserves an open world remake. almost every character in 6 >>> anything in 7 Hopefully in psvr3

I don't mind the combat style of the game, I hated the side quests though. I did pretty much all of them and they hardly added anything to the game, just padded the playtime. The last 1/3rd of the game is decent though, and it ended with me wanting to play more so I will be getting Rebirth.

VR is never going to happen. With how SE been the past 15 years I don't trust them to do 6 any justice. They would probably split it up into 4 games because people lapped it up with FF7r.

Square kind of seems like the Blizzard of Japan, just living off of nostalgia.

I actually played FF6 pixel remaster last year, vastly superior game.

I think there’s one somewhere, but not sure how far back it is.

I really enjoyed the game, for the most part, and am looking forward to the second. I definitely agree on the side quests. Midgar didn’t have the best side content in the original game either, but with how long part 1 was in development for I feel lIke they could have done more with the side stuff. I liked the recreations of the various mini-games from the original and the arena was pretty well done.

Dialog was a bit of a mixed bag for me. When it hit, it hit very well. I think they did a good job laying down hints for the future and leaving intrigue on where they’re going to take the story, but there was a fair amount of fairly typical overdramatic JRPG nonsense. I don’t mind some off that, but I totally understand where it turns people off.

I enjoyed the combat system. It’s not as weighty as something like GOW, but it’s clear that isn’t what they were going for. I think the system really shines when you play on Hard and the game forces you to really take advantage of every system, all the characters, etc. The balance on the default difficulties seems all over the place at times.

I saw recently that the devs for Rebirth were saying that they took inspiration from Witcher 3 for the side quests this time. They’re setting a pretty high bar, so we’ll see how that goes.

Better than Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed at least. That is the part I worry about the most. Will side quests take up too much time and kill any sense of story delivery? I also worry about UE4. It does not handle open world games well. The last game still had a minor stuttering problem on PC as it was.

6 should be remade and I tend to agree on the characters but for one huge issue... Cloud and Seph aren't interesting either. They have great character designs and the game hit at a point where anime and Japanophilia was really taking off in the US and thus did really well. But they weren't interesting.

Cloud is the same bland and dull protagonist of all the FF games and that's fine because a lot of the games (and 6 does this really well) are more about the non main characters and their drives and motives. So I'll give him somewhat of a pass as whatever. Seph on the other hand is boring as fuck. If you place him next to Kefka from FF6 Seph is bland as all hell.

6 hit it out of the park with characters and personalities so I doubt it's going to be topped soon.

One of the things I love about Remake is just how much more they characterize Cloud. You’re right, in the OG he could come off as a bit bland. There are plot reasons for why he’s a bit stoic and a bit of a closed off jerk, but the game really doesn’t explore Cloud’s character until like disc 2. Remake gives him so much more development and personality. I love how much of a try-hard dork he is and Remake does a much better job of building his relationship with Aerith.

Hopefully Rebirth will do the same for Sephiroth. What they’ve shown so far definitely feels like they’re going to expanding on Steph’s personality. Crisis Core’s remake helps too since they’ll be able to reference events from that game to help make Seph more interesting.

Looking forward to it. Already feeling the hype so I doubt I'll be able to wait for the PC version to drop.

ohhh...

hopefully it wont be as long of a wait then...

The PC port for the last one was more or less dropped, with minimal effort, minimal marketing and maybe 3 graphic settings. I hope more effort is put into this port, but if they are advertising the exact end date of exclusivity I assume it is coming shortly after.

Possibly. Though there's always a chance of another Remake situation where DLC results in the exclusivity being extended by another six months.

It took Remake 6 months to come out on EGS, and then another 6 months to come out on Steam. Hoping they don't have an Epic exclusivity period this time...

I could be wrong, but I don’t think they’ve done Epic exclusive releases in a bit. So, hopefully, that means this one won’t be either when it inevitably gets ported.

Stranger of Paradise was the last one that I'm aware of. The Crisis Core remaster didn't even come out on EGS, so I don't know what's up with that.
