I've googled for a while but i'm coming up short. This seems to be possible with the apple 27" thunderbolt displays, but i would much prefer if some type of adapter exists that will convert a single thunderbolt/displayport output on a new macbook air to drive 2x 2560x1440 displays (dual-link dvi most likely). Thanks for any help!

No idea, but I'm interested in the answer because I'm getting ready to add a second 2560x1440 display. You will probably get better answers on one of the mac forums ... MacRumors, AppleInsider, ilounge, or the official Apple support forums at discussions.apple.com

It would be better to ask this in a mac forum. For PCs the thunderbolt display is not useful: it works on *nothing* except the intel GPU (and then only on 1 out of 10 motherboards) and will not work on discrete GPUs.
