Different LCD, same inverter

No one helped me out in Mobile Computing, so I figured I'd ask here.


Generally speaking, can you use different size LCD screens with laptops, as long as they have the same inverter, and are using the correct LCD cable to match the laptop?

I have a 17" HP DV9000, came with a broken screen, but I have no money to buy a 17" at the moment, but I have other 15.4's lying around. Can I pop one of the 15.4's in there if I use the DV9000's inverter and cable?

No, you'll have to use an external monitor for the time being.

Any reason why it wouldn't work?
Would is display improperly, or fry something?
