Dell 2407WFP LCD monitor or a TV LCD, for my xbox360?

I know many of you will be tempted to say i should buy a large (>>37") HD 1080P TV LCD, but i don't have neither the money nor the space for such a big TV LCD. So, i have only two options:

1: buy a LCD TV, maximum 32", 720P only.
2: buy a 24" LCD PC monitor, like Dell 2407 and use it with the xbox360, on the VGA input, in 1080P HD. The good part is i will also use it as a PC monitor.

My question is, which of the two looks better? The Dell in 1080P on VGA, or some 32" TV LCD in 720P?

ps: i don't live in US, so the prices here are a little different, for ex. the Dell 2407 cost the same as a 720P 32" LCD TV.

ps2: if anyone uses the Dell 2407 with a console (Wii, xbox360 or PS2), PLEASE share the impressions with me.

I use the 2405 (basically the same monitor) with an Xbox 360, and PS3, and it works great other than the lack of built in speakers, and it looks very good as well. However, I recently got a 47" 1080p LCD, and games look WAY better on that. Why? I think it is because you can see all the little details they are putting into games these days so much more clearly on a larger monitor.

So my advice is to go with a 32" LCD, with 8 extra inches ALL your games will look a lot better. There is one caveat however.... If you need a lot of screen real-estate when doing stuff on your PC (as with some MMORPG's, photo editing, and many other common activities), then a 1280x720 screen just isn't going to cut it. In that case it would be fine to get the 24" monitor, or even to save up another ~$300 and getting a 1080p 32" LCD.

For just Xbox 360 a TV is the way to go. You get 16:9 aspect ratio and 720p is perfect for XBOX 360 since very few games are native 1080p. 720p isn't enough for PC use though, at least for me.

The Dell 2407 is okay for XBOX 360. It is 16:10 and last I checked the 1:1 pixel mapping does not work at high resolution so the 360's 16:9 content will be slightly stretched. You'll want to use X360's VGA cables to get 1080p, but there is a small bug where every time you switch to VGA input you'll want to manually reduce the sharpness to get rid of some odd lines you'll see on the screen. Overall though the image will look good.

As for PS2, Wii, etc keep in mind that the quality of component inputs on most computer monitors is low. It won't look that great. Plus the fact that your are inputing 480p to be stretched to 1920x1200 on an LCD which doesn't handle non native resolution well. Basicly it won't look too hot. If you use PS2 and S-cable it will be even worst. The TV will do a better job with these inputs (component and s-cable).

Pretty buggy rev.. The new one is 04, maybe this one fixed the vga issues.

I have an rev.1 Dell 2405 manufactured in July 2005 and my 360 is connected to it via VGA and the picture quality is fantastic 1:1 ratio works great though i go for full screen since the distortion is only slight.

I had Joytech component cables for my 360 (its a core system) which were shite and had a lot of noise, but my joytech component cables for my original XBOX are noise free and give a fantastic picture. I love my 2405 and would never accept anything less. I even get great picture quality from my Dreamcast over s-vhs. But then this is all subjective.

I have two Dell 2405FPW 24" monitors. Both offer poor colours with my Xbox 360s, and I've even noticed a little ghosting. I'd definitely recommend going for the TV route.

Well check with the guys over at the display forum. There was a 2407 thread and a few people with X360's.

my 2407 works awesome with my 360. Whats even nicer is i can switch between my computer display and 360 just by pressing a button on my monitor.

Oh, if you DO get a 2407, make sure you get a VGA cable for your 360. The component chip on the 2407 sucks, but the VGA one looks great.

Also remember if this going to be your new PC Monitor, your computer has to be up to the task at running games in your LCDs huge 1900x1200 native res. If this is just for 360, even the cheap 27inch LCD TVs are going to look better in 720P then the Dell. Even though they may seem cheap, the panels will still be better. I have a 27" Wesinghhouse 720P LCD TV and it smokes my Dell 2007 WFP Rev A04.

Yeah, i think i will buy a 32" lcd tv and connect it to consoles and PC (for movies and maybe pc games). For office and web browsing i will get a cheap 19" lcd and that's it.
I just wonder how good will look web browsing on a 720P 32" TV LCD and from what distance...

I don't quite understand what you're saying, 1680x1050 on a smaller screen versus 1280x720 on a larger screen just means your text will be bigger but much less defined...

Yes, but you don't look at the 32" screen from the same distance as for the 24" screen...

The problem is that the XBOX 360 only outputs 1280x720 to that 1650x1080 20" LCD vs 1280x720 onto a 720p (1280x720) 27" LCD TV. So on one monitor you get a stretched image and on the other you get a perfect 1:1 image.

wouldn't the Xbox letterbox it so the image doesn't distort?

Have a Wii and PS2 hooked up to my 2407 A04 via component. Looks pretty good to my eyes when sat back, looks like crap when viewing at usual PC monitor distances.

Unfortunately no, but distortion isn't the main issue its the fact that 1280x720 is stretched to 1680x1050 vs a perfect match of 1280x720 on a 1280x720 LCD.

Ah, well that sucks. Looks like they could simply have that option "Keep aspect ratio" and then letterbox what's out of it or such. So the image looks as good as it can without stretching and such.

The Dell monitor has 4:3 ratio mode where it black-bars the sides, it also has a 1:1 display but that means black-barring on all sides so that only the 1280x720 is shown admist 1680x1050 pixels. So it'd be a pretty small image.

The particular dell in question is the 2407 so its a 1920x1200 resolution monitor. It has options like 1:1, but at least in the A03 revision it didn't work at higher resolutions like 1920x1080. If it did work it would only have small black bars at the top and bottom because the x360 can do 1080p.
