I'm getting a laptop. I opted for the default low end HDD because I had an SSD already that I plan to swap in. I think the easiest thing for me to do would be to duplicate the data on the HDD in the laptop to my new SSD.

What would be the best free way to do this? Any free software I can load onto a USB where I can do this without even loading into windows?

clonezilla is a bootable linux distro for doing just that, and works very well..

clonezilla only allows you to clone to a disk that is the same size or bigger. For example: you can't clone a 1TB spinner to a 128GB SSD.

Gparted to shrink partition on 1TB harddrive to 120GB or whatever.
Clonezilla to image the now much smaller partition to the SSD.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

Just a thought. Can I just install Windows 7 on my new SSD just to get it bootable on the laptop and then overwrite all the data on the drive doing a simple copy & paste from the source drive? Or am I missing the big picture where this wouldn't work?
