I have a desktop that is Windows XP SP2 and using wireless. As of a Wednesday, it no longer can view web pages. I've flushed the DNS, did an IP stack fix, virus scan with Nod32, and scanned with Spybot. I am able to ping web sites, do trace routes, and view my network shares.

I've tried IE7, FF 3.0.5, Opera 10.x, and k-melon.

I'm not familiar with what that is.

I do have 2 other computers using the wireless just fine.

Maybe the router is not assigning it an IP address when it renewed the IP addresses. I have that happen sometimes and I fix it by pulling the power on the router for 10 seconds or so and then plug it back in.

It is getting an IP address. Even when using a static IP, I get the same results.

Run Hijackthis and get a log. Scan it at hijackthis.de I have had malware that has done this before. It acted like a type of bomb, and I had to remove it to get a connection back.

same issue occur if you hardwire into the router?

Not able to as they are in separate rooms.

Check your hosts file. It's in system32/drivers, you'll have to open it with notepad. There should be no entries besides 127.0.0.1 localhost and the # comments (unless you've immunized system with an spyware scanner like Spybot).

System has been immunized by Spybot, so there are entries besides 127.0.0.1.

Even though it is in another room, there is no way to try it out wired?
Are you using a Nvidia Chipset?
Anything you did Wednesday prior to the problem occuring? Software Installation? Configuration Change?

Just for kicks, try browsing using this http://moogu.net/BasicBrowse.exe.

The only other time I've experienced something like this was when the user had a 'ghost surfer' type program on their computer.

Have you tried disabling all non-microsoft start up items then rebooting and trying?

Can you connect a wired connection to see if it works? Can you shutdown the teatimer and any other blocking software and see if that helps?

Nope, motherboard is an Asus A7V1333. Only thing that was added was a Microsoft updated for Software Distribution List 3.0.

Did that, and didn't work.

Solution

It was the Software Distribution List 3.0 that caused this problem. I did a restore point from Monday and all is good now. Man that was a pain in the butt.

What do you see for network status information when you look at the troubled connection? What addresses are show for ip address, dns servers and gateway? Is connection DHCP enabled if used and do you have DHCP enabled?

No need to keep this thread alive since I found my problem and fixed it.
