My guess is the students forgot to take off their icloud when they returned it. I'm putting it here to see if someone has the time and resource to fix/unlock/use for parts. I'm going to ewaste them if ti's not worth my time.

If you can't sell them, see if you can drop them off at an apple store to be recycled instead of regular e-waste
