ok... I just got everything installed... FINALLY :)

been working on putting this machine together for a couple months. Here's the final breakdown

2x quad core opterons
4GB of DDR2 (ECC Disabled)
Windows server 2008

I went through a period where the first sticks of RAM had to be RMA'ed. Then when the RAM was finally working, the hard drive crapped out and I had to order another one

but it's all working now...

here's the shitty part. Everytime I start the smp client (no bidadv or anything) the server croaks and reboots...

anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a power supply issue to me..Might explain the random components failing as well...

650W better be good enough... and it's brand new

the hard drive was on it's last leg in the first place too. It was an old 200GB

I'm downloading ubuntu 10.04. Gonna give that a try.

I threw the smp -4 at it and downed the ram available to 2048... lasted much longer but still crashed before 1% :(

Server 2008 & R2 are extremely stable.

I have used both heavly for folding without issue.

From what you are describing, the issue is hardware related.

R2 is 64 bit only. I'm using that on one machine right now without any issues.

As Evil said, it does seem like you have some hardware issues.

If not the PSU then maybe you are having heat probs. Check the HSFs on those procs and make sure they are seated properly. You also need to make sure you have enough voltage to the cpus and RAM.

What mobo do you have?
Try with just 1 stick of RAM. Have you run Memtest?
probably just have a bad mobo. I went through a couple on my last build.

I run 2008 R2 for my farm and its very stable.

I agree with Nitrobass24. Try Memtest for a week. That is a good first step.

You still might have bad hard drives. They can cause nightmares because their problems are not readily apparent and they seem to make you question other components when in fact it is the hard drive.
