can any portable dvd players play dvd roms?

dvd-rom as in stuff for a computer? Because normal movie dvds are DVD-ROM

i mean like if i burn a dvd with a bunch of avi files, are there any portable dvd players that can read the avi files?

Well if you burn a dvd then it isn't really read only, is it? I don't know of any dvd players that can play straight avi files, but it is very easy to convert video files to a suitable format for a dvd.
