browsers cant view sites

i'm trying to fix my cousins laptop, his laptop can ping sites like google.com but the browser can't view websites and applications like AIM can't connect to the internet. I thought it was the routers problem but every other computer in his house works fine, he also brought his laptop over to my place and it does the same thing. I've ran virus scans, tried the winsockfix utility and tried firefox that is running off my USB flash drive. any ideas anyone?
 
i'll try it out this weekend, if it doesnt work i was thinking of just reformatting the whole thing
 
i would check the host file just to make sure nothing is iffy... you never know your browser might be routing to a different location

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
 
Start -> Run -> cmd <enter>

netsh int ip reset reset.log <enter>
netsh winsock reset <enter>
reboot
