When is Blu-ray coming out? I am planning on getting a DVD +/- RW soon, I was just wondering if it is worth waiting for Blu-ray...

well its technically already out...in japan. im not sure when the US is going to start selling it.

No, it's not worth waiting for. It'll be several years until it becomes affordable. By then, its viability will be questionable due to competing blue and violet laser solutions.

plus they haven't decided on a standard to the new HDTV dvds, its either going to be HD-DVD or blu-ray.

To me, blue laser is as close to vaporware as anything.

When i was in school 8 years ago, i remember reading magazine articles touting blue lasers.
And people were buying into the hype bigtime, like one guy wasn't going to replace his dead cdrom since blue lasers were "right around the corner".

I'm guessing at least 5 years.

And who knows since dual layer dvd burners are supposed to be coming in mid 2004.

They have. The DVD Forum selected the violet-laser HD-DVD format for its backward compatibility and huge storage space (15-20 GB per side).

They exsist, but they are orange:)confused: ).

Here is a PC drive:

But they also have some sort of copy protection built in to the discs and burners/players, that is why the Movie Studios are high on them.

I am sticking with my current burner(opterite 4x dual format)until I see a need for higher speed, and when a future format is all ironed out.

or you can read more about it here

so, would it be pointless to get one somewhere b/w now and...dunno...latest is april?
