Just trying to figure out whats better. A I920 overclocked to 3.6 or a L5639 at 3.3. Just simple question. Thanks

The hex, by quite a bit, even at the lower clock speed.

i'll tell you on sunday....... I'll be installing an OCing my l5639 then to replace my 950 at 3.6

Okay, I got my l5639 installed and running.

I'm oc'd to 190x17 at 1.132V right not, ~3.2Ghz and am pulling the same tpf as my 950 @3.6Ghz and 1.22V 4:10 on 7504

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a similar question:

Which is better, i7 2600k running at 4 ghz, or dual Xeon E5620s running stock 2.4 ghz?

The dual quads will throw more ppd.... when compared on SMP but it won't be a HUGE difference.

That said depending on what happens with -bigadv, 16 threads might be a very nice thing to have.

Yeah looking ahead, I was wondering about that. But I wonder if those 16 threads would still make the deadline at that speed?

Similar PPD but they might actually draw less power from the wall.

guess I'll throw the l5639 in,can't imagine it will effect gaming much and also track down a cheap sr-2 so I can run my x5570's

Oh, my temp is only 60C too.

Same performance, but less power and heat from it.

The only issue with sr-2s are the damn case mounting!

Jst thought I'd update the OP, i've got mine to 3.5, 205x17, at 1.21Vcore and qtt/vtt of 1.38

It hovers around 70C Is this to high? Coretemp and realtemp show 81 as top.

At smp 10 in vbox I'm doing 20-22k ppd

nice overclock I have the l5639 running at 3.6 folding happy but get a random reboot every thre to four days and no reboots at 3.5something. Needs better cooling I guess. Now I am trying to get two more sr-2's up and running.

I just had locks too now, the 71xx units crapped me out.

Can X5650 @ 3.8ghz handle 6904 on time? probably not be able to get full credit right?

A single x5650 can complete a 6904 on time; however come January 16th it will not be able to run -bigadv as 16 cores will be new new requirement.

An sr-2 with a pair of x5650s will net you ~200k PPD, and complete 6904s in about 35 minutes. You would be set for the rules change.
