i want to get a gigabit switch so far i think dell has good quality switches, anyone know any better options, also can i link 2 of the the 8 port switches togethor to have essentially 14 ports, i know the 16 port model supports somethiing like this but there is no mention in the description for the 8 port one. thanks

also any good choices for gigabit NICs

I got one of these from 3Com. Great switch, nary a problem.

at work we have three "dead" 3com switches ill have to test them out...

no comments on the dell switches? anyone?

I got an 8 port Dell. Works fine, no problems. Yes, you can connect two together, but the bandwidth between the two switches will be limited to a gigabit in each direction, so it won't truly be equivalent to a 14 port gigabit switch.

I have an 8-Port dell GigE switch, the 2508 and a bunch of Trendware/Trendnet GigE NIC's for my network, they all work great together.

The nics were only $20 at the time.

We use the hell out of 5212 and 5224 12 and 24 port Dell managed gig switches up here at the office. No problems yet. The GUI sucks and the CLI sucks, but you'll figure it out eventually.

have an 8-port linksys Gb switch, man it's loud.. no problems though

Loud? What, does it have a fan on it? Bleh, 3Coms have passive cooling and works great.

Because they all pass traffic at half-duplex speeds. :D

Sorry, could not resist. I do not like 3com very much.

Based on what experience?

3Coms are great.

3 out of 4 3com switches I've had the displeasure of using were dead in under a year.

Their NIC's are also highly overpriced and highly overrated.

I like to think of them as the Sony of the networking industry.

well i just got the standard linksys router and set up some 128bit encryption, gonna update the firmware now. but anyways i think i will wait and get the 24 port dell switch that way i dont have to upgrade agian later when i need more ports.

i think 3com sucks cause the fact i see 3 dead 16 port switches of theirs everytime i work, if it werent for that i would look into them more but now im scared., plus dell prolly has better support than 3com

edit: quote the post above this one!!!!!!!

*shrug* To each is own. And for your info, they don't even offer switches that do half duplex anymore and my Gigabit switch sure as hell aint one of them.

But to call 3Com a parody of Sony is going a bit overboard. Every single one of their nics we installed works flawlessly and installs without a fuss and only one client had a bad 3Com switch with just one flaky port. My sales consultant has installed hundreds of the Officeconnect switches and only small percentage of clients have had issues with them, and these are just unmanaged level 2 switches.

He's actually seen switches like D-Link, Linksys ect.. cause sporadtic issues with clients networks that were basically fixed by replacing the switches with 3Coms. This is coming from a guy with 30+ years of networking and sales consulting experience.

Hell, my LAN place a few years ago had three 16 port 3Com 100mbps switches that were pounded on like holy hell with terabytes of data from games, porn downloads, movies, music..ect.ect.. and those things kept right on clicking with narely a problem

If you have that many problems with 3Coms, your either putting them in enviroments they are not designned to run or God hates you and choose this fate upon you. :D

Have no experience with Dells, so I can't comment on them.

That's probably what happened. They were inside medical imaging rooms and usually installed underneath MRI and CT machines.

I've also been struck by lightning a few times. When I walk into a server room, all the LED's tend to blink real fast.

Why the hell is the switch that close to equipment like that then is what I wanna know. I don't care if you put a Cisco switch, the RF waves coming from equipment like will fuck up even the best equipment unless it has military quality shielding on it.

Hell I had a client who kept complaining that their computers kept acting sporadically and locking for the past 4 years in thier steel factory and no one could figure out why. Come to find out, the damn things were sitting next to lathing, grinders and plasma cutters at a warehouse. My eyes almost rolled outa my head...........
