Backup Exec and vSphere - how's it work?

Before we shell out $5K for a couple of BE VI agents, does anyone know how it works with vSphere? In googling around, I saw an 'opinion' from one guy that thought that VCB would be going away and instead replaced by the Data Recovery API.

Can anyone chime in on this? What are you using for backups with ESX4?

To clarify, we're still on 3.5U4 - this is one of the reasons for not upgrading yet...

VCB is being replaced in its current form, eventually - it will become two products - VMWare Data Recovery (VDR) and the vStorage API.

All of the major vendors (BE, Net backup, tivoli, etc) are designing their products to use the vStorage API, which is very similar to the connectors that the VCB framework presented. For enterprise level products, or ones that need tape backup / etc built in, they will be the product of choice, but won't need the old VCB install to function. In other words, it'll look like VCB, talk like VCB, but be totally built in and work great.

VDR is taking over for small business/dev/etc, where offsite backup isn't needed, and where you have a max of 100 vms / etc to back up.

Thanks lopoetve - now I can only hope that symantec will not charge another several grand to upgrade to the new API version of the same old agent...
