Apple sent Imagination Technologies an ultimatum stating that in less than 2 years they will be prescinding of their services as the designer of their mobile gpu's, instead moving to a chip of their own (Apple) design. This ultimatum has made IT lose 65% of it's market value.

This is huge news, and pretty bold.

"Imagination, however, said it doubted that Apple could go it alone without violating Imagination’ patents, intellectual property and confidential information. “This evidence has been requested by Imagination but Apple has declined to provide it,” it said on Monday. It said that Apple’s notification had triggered talks on alternative commercial arrangements for the current license and royalty agreement."

You know this has been happening since the iPhone 6s, right?

Apple built their own custom shaders for better performance/watt, and still licensed the front-end of the GPU from PowewVR.

This is just when they officially cut-off any more money to PowerrVR by making the entire GPU on their own. We've known this was coming for years, once they started building their own CPU.

If this turns into a lawsuit game, Apple will just wait for years and buy IT when it's a dead husk. Writing has been on the wall for IT since ARM started putting serious effort into Mali.

Actually, Apple hasn't stated that they intend to do their own GPU's, but every sign seems to point on that direction. But it could also mean apple going with someone else or even buying Imagination Technologies, which would make more sense.
