Apple G4 Case size question.

You will struggle, there simply isnt a great deal of space in the g4, a mATX board is about the biggest that will fit and even that will hit the optical drive when you try shutting the case door.

I've done the apple to pc mod here is the log which may answer some of your questions

Could you do a measurement for me since you have the case. I have been trying to figure out how tall the door is. The motherboard I was thinking of trying to fit is mine the MSI K8N Neo 2 and its 12" tall. If it's atleast 13" or so I figured I could dremel it a bit and maybe get it to fit.

wow. nice work, but it could be 100x neater. i am going to attempt this mod soon with a PCI-E board, using the existing CD slot with a laptop DVDRW and replacing the floppy with a highly modded SB front pannel/LCD. the apples on both sides and the front will light up, the speaker becomes a QProx scroll wheel, ect, ect ect.

the PSU is ATX spec, so i may/maynot replace it. and i realy want to keep the harddrive racks, they are quite cool.

i may be full of bs, but it looks like you rushed cutting out the back end connectors

the apple mobo is 12.0" tall, 10.0" deep, and the top-mid 5.5" are all less then 1.5" (including 1/2 of the cpu sink, it is half flat and half ribed) from the tray to clear the DVD drive. the bottom with cards goes up to 6" from the tray. there is an unused 4" from the end of the mobo to the end of the tray. let me know if you need aythiing else

Thank you very much, so it just seems a modification of the cdrom drive is in order. Thanks a bunch.

Yeah I did it a few years back and didnt have the time or the tools to finish it how I liked :(

I think you are going to have problems using full atx I would definitly look at mATX boards. It will save you a lot of time :)

PCI-Express (at least the one im looking at, http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=RS480M2-IL&class=mb ) is mATX, 9.60 in.(L) x 9.60 in.(W) considering that the apple mobo is 12.0" tall, 10.0" deep, i think it will work out alright. full ATX is 12"x 9.6", which would also techicly fit. (see http://www.tmc-uk.com/supports/general_faqs/rm_select.htm for size comparisons)

the biggest picture i could find was http://www.overclockzone.com/spin9/review/mainboard/msi/rs480m2/IMG_9533.JPG

where if my monitor holds any resemblence to scale, (its close enugh, mesured 19cm * 18cm) then the top of teh CPU socket is 8.3" from the bottom of the board. with the botom of the mobo tray where it is now, that clears the DVD drive perfectly, with enugh room for a full sized heatsink (assuming i ditch the floppy). also, the AGP and PCI slots are in EXACTLY the right place... 3.2" for AGP, and they both have 3 PCI slots. what crazy luck.

i like the simplicity of the apple's back pannel. i think im gonna trash the LPT port, the PS2 ports, and the COM port... it dont need any of that stuff. i am trying to get a blank holgraphic pannel - if i cant, ill just re use this one.

im getting more and more excited about this mod... my qprox wheel http://www.qprox.com/products/qwheel_qt510.php should arive soon, and i already have my blue-backlight LCD...
