Anyone Have This Call Of Duty 4 Error When Starting MP?

Heya , my dad wanted to start up an play COD 4 online , so i installed the latest patch , brand new clean install of the game etc... an would not start , it would crash instantly

an want to know the stupid fix to this? , we plugged in a mic to his pc an it fired right up .. wondering if anyone has gotten this error ?

hes running
vista 32bit home premium
amd x2 4000+
2gb ddr2 667
evga 8600gts 256mb

Make sure he has the lastest sound drivers. Doing so fixed the problem for me.

yah the problem is fixed right now , by plugging the mic in lol .. but ya hes got all latest drivers etc ... such a stupid fix imo

haha this same thing happened to me today when i switched headsets

im just amazed that not having a mic can cause a crash...
