An announcement on Pastebin has declared Operation Global Blackout will shut down the entire Internet on March 31st. Netsters are not really giving credence to this announcement and are calling it an April Fool’s Day prank by someone not associated with Anonymous.

"They might affect a few of the root DNS servers, but it's unlikely they could take all of them down, at least for any period of time. On the day of their planned Global Blackout, it's doubtful many people would notice."

So if they did literally take out the whole internet, I guess they'd start communicating via snail mail and start going places in-person again?

It's either a joke, or something is really confused about how the Internet works.

They just need to break into the room that has the giant Linksys router and unplug it. They could easily take down the entire internet. The question is, for how long?

If sites around the net wouldn't pick up Anonymous news those folks would have become truly irrelevant a long time ago. Whop-dee-doo, they took down some gov web sites no one gives a shit about for a few minutes, big fucking deal. Remember how they tried Amazon and went home to their basements crying cause they couldn't even dent it?

it they did that, then "Anonymous" would defeat themselves!

I don't think they thought their plan through completely...

p.s. these guys are twits

Somebody else seems to have forgotten that Robert Morris crashed internet in 1988 by accident. In Secrets and Lies Bruce Schneier mentions that he's heard plenty of believable means from network experts, I'm sure most [H]ard types can think of a few (not claiming they would actually work.).

The question is if anon is dumb enough to smash the only window bringing light in their various basements. If they make a sincere effort, our species is a lot dumber than previously thought and security will have to be rethought from "strong against an attacker with something to gain" to idiot-savant proof.

because the Internet is essentially unchanged since 1988

Good luck with that script kiddies. It's called ISP DNS servers as well which would have a large cache on them, as well as people's local caches.

"War on Cyber Terror."

I'm just waiting for it.

Yeah, Anonymous will shut down the net... by stirring the politicians. The internet will be locked down tighter than the great firewall of China.

They should change their name to Annoying-us. Because they really don't do anything useful other than that.

Odd what makes it on the [H]ardOCP front page these days... you're feeding the trolls!

Whoever dreams up these stories continuously demonstrates a tremondous misunderstanding of what anonymous is. It isn't even a group. It doesn't have a head. It doesn't have members. It doesn't have a spokesman. It doesn't have a singular agenda.

It's just a bunch of people that are tired of the way things are.

Any time you see a news story about something "anonymous" is planning or something "anonymous" said, you can guarantee the author of that story is an idiot or an astroturfer. Maybe both.

If one types "Anonymous" into the search engine here at [H] you'll see Al and Steve are included in this categorization...

Seeing these headlines is like seeing a 75 year old great grandmother trying to give a twenty minute description of rap after listening to a single Kanye West track.

Just set up a script that replaces all mentions of "anonymous" on the Internet with "some guy on the Internet." You'll find they are quite interchangeable and share the same meaning.

theres a big difference in the internet now and what existed in 1988, there was really not a world wide web then, there were only a few routers not the millions we have out there no, the protocols were not well developed and security was in its gestation period. These people are self important idiots who have a bigger opinion of thier abiliitoes than they actually have.
