Altec Lansing ADA880 problem

I have owned and babied this set of speakers for about 5 years.
I guess it's finally showing some wear or something.. or maybe it's possessed but here are the symptoms:

1. Will not respond to buttons on the speaker or the volume control on the speaker
2. The lights that indicate volume level doesn't seem to work well either
3. It does respond to the remote, but it's very sporadic. Sometimes it won't respond, other times it will but then it will do some crazy possessed type of things. If I try to raise the volume using the remote, it will just keep increasing the volume even when I depress the button.
4. It will just turn off all of a sudden for no reason and then turn on again at either high volume or low volume


Is the shelf life of speakers generally 5 years or so? I'm not really complaining or anything.. these speakers were very nice while they worked. But I was hoping that if I kept good care of it, the speakers would last me for a bit longer.

Is it possibly something with the wiring inside or something?
