I am building a am2 setup for somebody on a 400 dollar budget. The mobo I am looking at is a msi kn9 nf5 550 mcp mobo. Any better mobos or comments on the current pick? The 590 ultra one Is supposed to be good so I am hoping this one is also. Btw ithis rig is not for anything intensive just throwing a semptron 3000+ in it with a gig of gskills ddr2 667.
P.s any am2 mobo can run a sempron bc its the same socket right?

My two favorite mobo companies are MSI and Asus. I've built 3 AM2 rigs with MSI 570 mobo's so far, and everything is great. I'm assuming the lower end 550 will be the same.

When you throw a Sempron in it, just make sure its socket AM2, and not 939. ;)

Memory should work fine with that. Just remember to setup your timings and voltages correctly in the bios so it works and actually boots without getting a blue screen of death. :p

When you mean 400 budget, does that mean everything for the entire computer like PSU, case, hard drives, etc? or is that just the cpu/ram/mobo. Because for $400, you can get a lot more than a sempron, 550 mobo, and a gig of ram.

Im using the msi k9n platinum. its about 109 from zipzoomfly. Having really good luck with it so far.

That abit is $100.
DFI Infinity is around $100.

Next and only choice for you? EPOX

All of these prices include shipping (ala NewEgg).

1. AMD Sempron 3000+ = 56.00$

2. ABIT NF-M2 = 104.40$

3. G.SKILL 1gb stick = 114.98$

4. Lite-On SHW160P6S05 DVD Burner = 34.63$
....or
....LG GCC-4522BK CD Burner/DVD Reader (combo drive) = 29.13$

5. WD 80gig SATA II HDD = 48.98$

6. Athenatech A3603BB Case w/ 400W PSU = 56.21$
....or
....APEX DM-318 Case w/ 220W PSU = 57.71$

Runs about $410. Getting the nice features of that mobo is definently worth the extra 10$ imo.

I was wondering the same thing...I just picked out the cheapest 1gig set available that was ddr667, which was a single stick with fast timings.
