I'm upgrading on a budget, would this card be enough to play it on descent settings? Any preference to which brand is better XFX,Powercolor,Gigabyte,Sapphire..etc

Should be able to play fine on medium settings just turn off defered AA-low AA post-and turn off blur and ambient occulsion, I would go ASUS DCII or XFX dual fan unit factory OC if you can find it, MSI makes good ones as well :)

How much better is the 6870 over the 6850? do you think prices will drop since 7000 series is coming out?

Go for the 6870

I would rather take a 5850 over 6850 unless you get the 6870 or 6950.

well if you get the right 6850 then can easily clock to match a 6870 even though they are missing some of the key features, such as shader difference, rop,tmu etc. Example when I got my 6870 form ASUS the 6850 from ASUS as well could match its performance when overclocked, and btw of voltage tweak there was maybe 1% favoring the 6870, with a fair overclock this was maybe 5% tops(couple of frames) that and even highly clocked the 6850 ran a bit cooler and used less power, had I know this at the time, I myself would have opted for the lower cost 6850 and walked away with a card almost as fast(as I overclock) and saved approx $45.

Personally, if you have the coin and the power supply to handle it, I would get a 6950 asa yes they are more pricey, but the price increase is worth it, there is actually a pretty fair performance difference between a stock clocked 6950 1 or 2gb and a cherry picked highly overclocked 6870 let alone a 6850, course, you could wait till january when the 7800 series gets released, thier performance gap is probably going to be well worth the patience.

Would my power supply be able to support a 6950? Corsair VX550W 550W If I can get a deal on one then I'll go for it. Otherwise I will have to go for 6850/6870.

If the deals are really bad for boxing day then I will take your advice and wait for 7000 series.

Yes it is. I would wait on the new release b/c the prices will drop quite a bit. Especially the used prices. Your psu could run the new ati cards too.

the 7k series are actually more power efficent then 6k series which are actually quite power efficent.

41ax12v=492w on the 12v rail, we will say 460 to play it safe. a modern GPU will consume approximately 200watts on average(for the high end cards, not the highest end) that leaves 260w on the 12v or 21a for cpu and everything else, so yes you should be fine for a single card use, though in all honesty I would prefer more overhead myself. So for a 6950 you should be ok as long as you do not overclock like crazy or have like 20 hard drives :p

I would still hold off though until the 7k series is shipping in volume, it should stabilize the prices a bit, and more then likely the 7800 series will be out by then making the 6k series a real bargain :)

Apparently 7850 is coming out in February for $199 but if the 6950 drops in price say $150 or lower would be best to pick up that? Best performance for the buck?

Also would an overclock of my Q6600 to say 3Ghz or 3.2Ghz be enough to keep up with these cards?

I don't have the cash for a new PC for a while so I have to get the most out of what I have now.

for single card use any decent quad core is more then enough.

7850 vs 6850, seeing as one is VLIW5 and other is VLIW4 the 7850 should be a nice difference, as example 6870 vs 6950 not really that much different spec wise, but it is far easier for them to gain performance benefits from VLIW4 as it is easier to develop for(in a performance/efficeny standpoint)

I do not see them doing $199 I think $175-$225 which would put 6850 at around $135

Spent the last 20 minutes playing on a Xeon X3440 (i7 860) and a gtx 280...which is quite a bit less powerful than a 6850 on medium with SSAO and medium post at 1920....40-50fps in fraps.

I think youll be fine with a 6850. The best player in our group plays on a e5200 @ 2.9ghz with an overclocked 9600gs at 1280..
