6800GS vs. 7800GS

I would go with the 6800 to save money so you can put it towards upgrades
 
Go with the 6800 GS because my friend has a 7800 GS and he didnt get much better frame rates on bf2 or FEAR

6800GT (16 Pipes) = 7800GS (16 Pipes) basically.
6800GS = 12 Pipeline 6800GT

the 7600gt should be the best buy

it consumes less power than the 6800 and 7800 and beats the 6800 almost catching the 7800
 
I am looking at replacing either my 6600GT or Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. Would I notice any real world difference going to a 6800GS or 7600GT AGP from either of these cards?

should mention that the 6800gs AGP is in fact a 6800GT with software locked pipelines...you can softmod using rivatuner to unlock it fully to a 6800GT, which makes it a bargain. It plays BF2 just great. The 7800GS would blow it away though, the 6800gt is about on par or just below a 7600gt in performance, and the 7800gs beats that but a bit.

It all depends on budget, but for the price of a 6800 you could most likely go 7600gt, and get better performance.

One version of the 6800GS was manufactured with only 12 physical pipelines(NV42 core instead of NV40), so it can't be softmodded. I'm pretty sure it's the AGP version.

The 7800GS would be a decent amount faster than the 6800GS, but the 7600GT is cheaper, performs almost as well, and can be overclocked to a point where it will equal or surpass the performance of the 7800GS. I recommend it over either of those cards. It will also provide a very large performance boost over your current cards, probably around 2-3 times as fast as the 6600GT which is your fastest card right now. Compared to the 9800 Pro, it would be around 3-4 times as fast.

Its the PCI-E version that is made with only 12 pipes...I've been the proud owner of two AGP 6800gs's which unlocked fully! Though the success rate isnt always 100%, sometimes the pipes are damaged, etc, and have to be relocked again...

But I agree...7600gt FTW!

yes it is the agp that can be unlocked... I made the mistake to get my friend the pcie version a while ago thinking i could unlock it, but nope, its just the agp one. I would save your money and buy the 6800gs, it runs battlefield just fine at those resolutions. everything on high and 4x aa, you could keep it above 40fps

the 6800gs (or 7600gt) will give you increases over both of those cards. check out vga charts at tomshardware to see if they are big enough gains for the $$
 
I was about to post which would be better? the 7600gt agp or the 7800gs agp. From what I read here sounds like a close enough comparison that I can afford to save the few dollars and get the 7600gt.
 
I really appreciate all your responses, but I must object to the comment about 7600GT is near 7800GS performance. In fact, it is more like on par with a 6800GT performance and comes close to a 6800 Ultra performance.

Don't believe me check out tomshardware VGA Charts. The 7800GS nearly doubles the 7600GT in every benchmark. Although, the 7600GT nearly catches the 6800 Ultra. Not bad, but for almost the price of the 7800GS, just seems like common sense.

Hope this clears things up.

Tomshardware VGA comparison charts are extremely inaccurate. The 7600GT actually performs a bit better than the 6800Ultra, and it's about on par with, if slightly below, the performance of the 7800GS. When overclocked, it should easily beat out the 7800GS.

Hrm...tomshardware though...I've always heard to take what they say with a grain of salt :) Having used both a 6800gs unlocked and overclocked to faster than ultra speeds (voltmod + accelero x1 cooler, effectively making it faster than an ultra) and a 7600gt, I would say the 7600gt is equivalent to the 6800 Ultra...what it lacks in raw power, the newer technology seems to make up for. Framerates between the two werent noticeably different, with the odd time noticing better frames after the 7600gt.

Basically, if you can get a 6800gs (which unlocks fully), are willing to voltmod it, and an Arctic Cooling Accelero X1 for cheaper than a 7600gt, do it, otherwise the 7600gt is better.

i went from a 6600gt to a 7800gs. HUGE performance gain...I can play FEAR with all the graphics (except for soft shadows) turned on...
 
Can you supply benchmarks to prove that the 7600GT is equal to the 7800GS? Also, if they are both about the same price and it takes the 7600GT to be overclocked to catch up the 7800GS then wouldn't it make sense to go with the 7800 instead?

If I understand you correctly, the 6800GS is the best bang for my money, right now, especially when I can get it for $135, right?

I just trying to figure out a nice enough AGP Video Card to hold me over until I make the plunge to PCIe in a year or so. Thanks again.

http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=3&id=2031&pg=7 is the first one I found. Anyway, they're not the same price and the 7600 GT is just as fast without needing to be overclocked. It's the clear winner. Buying a 7800 GS when you can get a 7600 GT is foolhardy. If you just need something to hold you over for a year, you might also want to check the X850 Pro VIVO for $140 at Newegg.

You can probably fly a 7600gt for 15 dollars more, and have it perform much better than a 6800GS stock. 7600gt is cheaper than 7800gs by a bunch, and is considered one of the best bang for your buck cards out there.

OR go with a X850 Pro over a 6800GS even though they are the same price after MIR.

$190 vs. $235 for the same performance is a no brainer. The MIR brings it down, but MIR's are bullcrap. Treating an MIR the same as cash money is like giving someone a no-interest loan for 6 months with no guarantee of being paid back. At best, a $30 MIR is worth $15 in cash money. Anyway, this whole discussion might be moot because it looks like the 7600 GT is out of stock again, and if the past is any indication, we might never see it again, or not for a long time.
