if i stick a 66mhz pci card in a 64-bit 66MHz PCI-X slot will it operated at the 266mbs that the hard drive controller says its capable of? the controller is a promise ultra ata 133 tx2 controller. it works fine in a 32bit 33mhz standard slot but promise says i will operate at 66mhz. Is 64bit pcix backwards compatable wih 66mhz pci? i dont get the difffrence between 64bit pci and 64bit pci-x either can some one explain this to me? will 64bit pci cards work in a 64bit pci-x slot? im a little confused.

PCI-X is a protocol enhancement over PCI. Among other things, it really facilitates large block data transfers without a ton of bus transactions.

By spec, PCI-X slots are supposed to be fully backwards compatible with PCI cards. Your controller should work fine. As long as your card conforms to PCI-66 specs (asserts M66_EN properly on the bus) it should run at 66 MHz just fine in your PCI-X slot.
