Hi all

My systems about 2 years old, and will be completely replaced at 3 year of age.

System:

Sugo 3
CPU E6350 @3.00
GPU Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB
4 MB ram
Vista 64
Power supply ST50EF-PLUS short cable edition http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=st50ef-plus-sc&area=usa

Ok, I’m looking to move up to a 24” monitor probably the HP 2475W or maybe the new Dell. Anyway I’m looking for a new graphic card that will fit my system with regards to power; my current power supply will provide 500w. As my system is SFF I’ve been looking for cards that run a little cooler like:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-210-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1403

And....

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 Vapor X PCI-Express Graphics Card
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-204-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=939

So the question is will my power supply run either of these cards without a problem? I believe the 4890 has a 6 and 8 pin power requirement ideally, not sure about the 4870 anyone?
Games played mainly strategy SOTS, Sins, Civ3 not 4 and Fallout 3 really enjoying this, future games Majesty 2, Diablo 3 Starcraft 2

So if my power supply is ok for both which card would you recommend?

Thanks

Hully

most 4890's use 2x 6pin connectors
The 4890 Vapor X uses 6 and 8pin ._o
and your power supply is ok for either of them considering the rest of your specs
the card will come with some cables if you have a modular PS, but since you dont...
uh oh

you'll need an adapter like
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812198016

im not sure if they make just a single 6 to 8pin ...but i suppose the 6 to dual 8 pin will work

i would get the 4890 and an adapter or wait for HD5xxx

edit: i was looking at the wrong card
your psu with it's 2x 6 pins will work with the 4890

I own this video card. It has 2 pcie 6 pin connectors.

As for whether or not your 500W psu will run everything depends on the quality of the PSU.

Here's a power calculator. Plug in your components, click calculate, and it will tell you how much you need.

I'm getting an estimate of 332W. So your PSU should be fine as long as it's fairly efficient.

Silverstone makes pretty solid PSU's so Id feel pretty safe saying their 500 watt units will actually make 500 watts continuous.

Hi

Thanks all for the info

The 4890 has just gone up in price by about £20 will shop around see if I can get it cheaper!

Many thx all appreciated
