trying to add more then 4 partitions to a hard-drive

but windows won't let me make any more then 4

is there any way around this?

Not really, you're limited to 4 main partitions in the table with fdisk. But once you create an extended partition, you can create as many logical drives as you want from it.

4 partition table entries is enough for 1 primary, 1 extended (with as many logical drives as you want), 1 linux and 1 linux swap. I've never needed more than that.

ok I create an extended partition and then create logical drives in that extended partition?

how would those logical drives differ from the regular partitions?
would they have drive letters and such?

thanks

yes

if you actually need more than 4 primary partitions, you need to use a bootmanager see the Advanced HDD Issues sticky thread for some links (Id recommend XOSL)

ps as mentioned 4 primary or 3 primary and one extended w\ logicals

there are situations where the safety or individual partitions (as opposed to a huge extended) has advantages, or partition backup
