Well, that's really annoying.

The 2K Forum seems to have been unceremoniously deleted from existence without as much as an alert or warning to users.

https://forums.2k.com just redirects to 2K's main page now.

I had over a decade of posts and information on there I referred to on occasion, having joined in the year before the release of Sid Meier's Civilization V to discuss that anticipated release.

It's a real shame, and really shitty of 2K to just remove it like that.

Just had to vent somewhere.

that you on reddit commenting on a thread from Feb? seems its been gone for a while...

Yeah, I just noticed today. Been a few months. I check in on those forums ever (or at least I used to) every few months only to find out that today it just wasn't there.

I double checked my links, and everything, scratched me head, it was really weird. To have said nothing. It was no Hardforum, but for a npublishers forum it was not bad. Full bbcode based web forum. It was pretty nice.

Most forums for games are being taken down, new games just rely on Discord or something.

Six Days in Fallujah (early access) has actual forums up which I find nice. I will get that once they add in friendly AI.

Discord really needs to die. It has ruined online and multiplayer communities, not to mention that anything posted there will be lost to time, especially when the search function is useless.

I agree. I hate it when people say "the devs are active on Discord" or to get help on Discord. I've tried it, it is essentially like going to a hall and shouting and other people already talking. Yes sometimes it can work if someone helpful happens to be online, but it isn't great for discussion among many people. And searching for solutions or following conversations is horrible.

I see it a good MSN messenger replacement which is a great way to chat with a friend or two but it isn't even remotely similar to a forum.

Iunno, I use it quite often. I don't mind it. Beats the hell out of Reddit which seems to have a majority of gaming context.

I strongly feel like a vbulletin-style bbcode enabled web forum is the pinnacle of online discussion.

Nothing, not Discord, not Reddit, not Facebook, not Twitter, absolutely nothing comes close to a good vbulletin style bbcode web forum when it comes to having online discussions.

I've seen people on Reddit sometimes express exasperation that web forums still exist, but with how god awful Reddit layout and UI is I don't understand how they can possibly think it is superior. The only reason I ever wind up on Reddit for anyhting is because the vast volume of people on there means that I am more likely to find my stupid little corner case piece of information I am looking for, but every time I go I wind up with a renewed hate for how awful the reddit thread layouts are for following a discussion.

Interesting. Maybe, I guess.

The forum was separate from the support portal, but maybe they successfully attacked both of them.

All i know is I got an e-mail from them around that period asking me to change my account password, but I never managed to as is was always offline.

I never even got that email, but I don't think I was ever in touch with their customer support system. I only used the forum.

I never used the 2k forums but I feel your pain, when the Bioware forums shut down a ton of information was lost.

My biggest gripe with reddit for game info is that I find too many searches lead to discussions that have been deleted because someone decided it would be a good idea to delete the whole sub and replace it or combine it with others. Wikis used to be a good source of some info but most of those have been defaced by a handful of individuals that think that half of the actual game info is useless and needs to be deleted and then add tons of "lore" that's largely fanfic.

I agree. Reddit has a shitty UI, and upvotes that raise comments defeat the entire purpose of having a discussion. The problem is most games tend to have Reddit or Discord only these days. Reddit is useful for random things that might not gain enough traction to have a dedicated forum but otherwise it should die.

What was even worse was that you needed to download all the Mass Effect 2 DLC through the forums, and BioWare just fixed that issue a year or two ago by bundling it all into digital copies. Which was after the release of the Legendary Edition. Prior to that you needed to dig up an old support page on EA's website to download them. I think Dragon Age: Origins still has the same issue, but that DLC is easier to find.

Discord is not that bad, when a server is properly set up and configured, but most "admins" have no bloody clue and just set up crap in the discord that does nothing to make things work well. Using a combo of proper permissions, threads vs channels, lots can be done in Discord to make it similar to a forum.

No, it's bad even at its best, every thread there is a slew of endless conversations with no apparent beginning or end, with occasional random interjected posts. If the mods are diligent to set up topics, then the problem becomes that most users are too lazy dumb or both to post in the appropriate section. One or two threads will run away, while the others get crickets. Not to mention anything older than a few days is lost to time. Nobody is finding a discussion from 2 years ago in discord and realize it answers their question.

It is the most horrible thing since guestbooks. I'd say even worse than guestbooks.

discord is the amlgamation of all the flaws of discussion boards, and chatrooms, with none of their benefits.

It is a fine MSN messenger replacement. But that is about it. But even with that the UI is almost impossible to work with. There are about a million notification settings and I could never figure out how to make it just highlight a tab when I got a new message. Constant sounds going off whenever you leave it on, in channels you have not logged into for a year. And then there is the cringe "we're sending ninjas to escort your friend request" and frequent updates every time you launch the damn thing. So I guess I take back the "its a fine MSN messenger replacement" comment as well. :p

As an IRC replacement (which is more what it began as) Discord is good. It acts as its own file host, contains persistent message history for all users (not possible with IRC unless every user used their own bouncer) and earlier Discord didn't even require registration to use—just a username (sadly this has changed to where some can't even register without them thinking they're a bot).

As a forum replacement though, in terms of topics that are better segregated, it's poor, yet various communities have tried to shoehorn it since they've dropped official forums. Discord has since added an optional channel threads feature in the past several months exclusively for 'public' communities, which behaves more like forum threads (segregated topics in a list, sorted based on latest activity) but that doesn't help with...

...The fact nothing to this day on Discord is searchable outside of Discord—or even inter-communities. Which is its biggest detriment as any de facto forum replacement (ie: for the purposes of helping the wider internet).

More like it's a decent enough ICQ replacement. None of these services have offered that many more features than IRC did many years ago(and often less) being successful is simply a matter of gaining enough traction to be the instant messaging service that's used by the largest number and thus obligatory for anyone else that wishes to communicate with them.

The increasingly transitory nature of many popular communication services along with many forums getting axed means that a lot of useful information will be lost which is more than a little ironic in the so called age of information.

This is how i look at it. I still idle in one IRC chan with some guys that have all been on there 20+ years now, but even we have a discord chan. Works for what I want. IRC replacement.
