They wanted this to be the NTSC standard but quickly changed phosphor formula for something that was producing more luminance brighter. Bigger gamut would also mean filters in cameras would have block more light thus worse camera performance and generally everything would be more expensive.It's funny that they had better (or more) colors in 1953 though I'm not sure about the provenance of this image so it could be wrong.
Gamut of NTSC 1954 is so wide not many even of today's color critical displays can handle it fully.
