10nm Cannon Lake CPUs are Available in the U.S.

10nm chips are now on store shelves, but probably not in the form you want. As spotted by dylan522p on Twitter, the Walmart, Amazon, and Newegg U.S. sites are listing Intel Crimson Canyon NUCs with i3-8121U CPUs, while SimplyNUC also has a section for them. These 10nm chips showed up in Chinese computers awhile ago, but this is the first listing I've seen in major U.S. retailers. Interestingly, the boxes also come with a 2GB AMD Radeon 540 GPU, as well as 8GB of LPDDR4 and a regular 1TB spinner.

For reference, a similarly priced, previous generation NUC with an i5-7260U actually boosts to a higher frequency than the i3, but doesn't support DDR4L memory.
 
I actually like these little boxes. I recently did a Lakka box with a 7th gen i5 NUC and its honestly a pretty phenomenal machine for that purpose
 
I am running one of the gemini lake NUC's as a mini unRaid server with vm/docker images. It uses less than 10 watts most of the time and at full tilt 17w. It has the performance equivalent to a core 2 quad q6600 which is more than adequate to use as a little dev server that pulls almost no power. I really like the NUCs as a micro home lab but the prices can get out of control fast.
 
To me this news is even funnier than nvidia announcing a 2500 video card for "prosumers". Nice dumping ground for scraps at best.
 
It's a pretty poor showing from intel 10nm. I really hope they've figured out their issues and will have a solid process next year. As fun as Rome and Zen 2 should be, I don't want intel to suck or everyone will be using TMSC and that creates another monopoly...

I have no issues with AMD kicking ass\absolutely destroying like haswell vs dozer for 18 months no issues, any further than that I see as meh, as it doesn't really benefit us, amd getting some war bank is however good.

On the 10NM.
Their frequencies and such is actually really bad and show no improvement on 14nm in other parts than density.
They have so many issues that they have to launch a product without IGP meaning the yield is horrible.

However this was launched this spring a while ago for china so no indication of the current state on how good the chips.

That would be very hard to do for Intel. 10nm for Intel 20nm for TSMC same story only Intel said there going to fix it and TSMC just abandoned it. I think there busy with 10nm for the last 4 years or so and everything they have to show for is that it works (not great yields but better then nothing) for small die sizes. They publicly said it should work for everything at some point and other reports said there skipping it.

Even if there is a fix for bigger die sizes then it will take a good while for that process to get better. In the end the 7nm process by TSMC in a 3 year lifespan from now might just be such an amount better that even Intel 7nm might not be able to catchup if Intel is stumbling with that process the same way as they did on 10nm (or as a better example 14nm).
