the control pod on my Z5500 died a few months ago, which speakers would you recommend in the 100-150 range, mostly for gaming and some music

You may consider the antec soundscience rockus 2.1 system. [H] did a review of it and say it's pretty good. It's on sale at newegg

Pretty funny considering I can score a pair of huge speakers like the Polk Monitor 10s or Paradigm atoms AND a receiver for $150 on craigslist.

Look used first. Pc speakers suck compared to what you can get used.

Ladic, if you tells us the nearest major us city you leave near to, I could check craigslist for you

To Spaceman - Not all multimedia speakers suck. Audioengine A5 will give both Polks 10's and Atoms run for their money (new prices, including cost of new amp)

Only for near field so yes in that case. Properly setup in a traditional fashion, nobody would choose them over the other full sized speakers. Regardless, cheers for offering to help.

give me the paradigm's anyday.

This Atom Measurement from stereophile:

yup which does not dictate sound quality.speakers can measure flat and sound like crap.

you also failed to read the article didnt you,or you would have seen this.

i quote"But it was his comment that the sound of the Atom "was what the High End is all about" "

True

only partially true, in most cases not true.

No I didn't failed to read Sterephoole. They write utter crap, verbal equivalent of liquid stool.
The only thing useful there are their measurements, but one has to be able to understand them.

they say the.same about all profesional reviewers on forums.its people/trying to act more important than what they are typical human behavior.if nothing they say is trustworthy why trust the graph.that could be altered to show anything they want.read around the net not only pro reviews also look at so
e posts here and there.paradigm makes some of the best sounding speakers made.what you need to know is graphs is only a starting point to find good sounding speaker.its definiately not the end all be all of speaker specs.what you hear in the end is far more important than what its says on paper it can do.

another prime example of a speaker that sounds fantastic, but looks bad on paper klipsch lascala.from a specs standpoint alone i wouldnt consider them, but once ya listen omg.now be sure you go off and find a response graph for them so you can so called prove me wrong.sounds to me you have alot of experience reading specs, amd alot less experoence actuallty listening.which is very similar to the difference between intelligence, and wisdom.

La Scala was designed in different time when AMPs there 20-30W considered very high, therefore they have extremely high efficiency due to huge horn design. I don't see anything in their specs which would turn me off, rather than their sheer size and weight. Modern designs could sound as good as these, but in must smaller footprint and size. They are still great speaker, but one which notoriously hard to measure, especially indoors. Room modes will make or break any speaker, especially this huge.

p.s:
"once ya listen omg" - yes, oh truly wise one.... :D

again sensitivity another spec that has zilch to do with sound quality.

ok lets get to the point im making here.dont always be a stickler to the specs.i can tell you basically know what your on about.always be sure when giving advice tell people to go listen.because one thing is a fact no 2 people have all the exact same dimensions in their head cavities.so that also means no 2 people hear exactly the same.in the end its all about the sound.i will add paradigms do sound very good, and all speakers are a compromise when compared to a live performance.

you should defo have some sound shops down there.go listen to several brands of speakers before buying any.because the most important aspect of sound is does it sound good to you.

I ended up getting the Logitech Z906 for $200 with a coupon code

You could do so much better than that. I hate it when people take the easy, boring route. Gl though. If you are happy with them. That is all that matters.

Hmm for that kind of money, I too agree you could have done something much much better. I was going to suggest M-Audio AV40's when I saw the thread, it is within the price range.

Going to jump in here, cause im also looking for a new set of speakers, gaming, music and movies. Those M-Audio speakers look juicy and reviews are great would I need some type of Receiver for them? I have X-FI Titanium Fatality sound card in my system. Thanks guys.

Amazon has the logitech z623's on sale now for $99 they are supposed to be pretty dam good....

They're powered speakers so you don't need a receiver. Just run the analog out from the X-Fi into the AV40s.

I could still cancel them I think, which could I do instead?

Several people have suggested Craig's List (its where I got my receiver too). I went to the Ft. Lauderdale page, searched for 'receiver' and this is what I got on the very first page, 2nd link:

http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/ele/2595832262.html

$100 for a 5.1 receiver is a steal (especially with your budget). The specs for it aren't bad either:

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/sony-str-de935-av/1707-6466_7-30098443.html

It decodes Dolby Digital and DTS, which is all you need for multi-channel gaming audio. If you need speakers, you can keep trolling Craig's List or look at Part's Express. With your budget, you probably won't be able to go straight to 5.1 surround. But since you have a receiver you can start with 2.0 or 2.1 and just add speakers later.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-652
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-631

$100 + $29.90 + $90 = $220

Not that much more than the Logitech set and it'll probably sound better. I say 'probably' because I haven't heard the Logitech set you picked, but I imagine those 6.5-inch 2-way Daytons will sound better than the 3-inch 1-way satellites the Logitech set uses (though you can't really know until you listen to them). Maximum PC's review of the Logitech set concurs:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/logitech_z906_51_speaker_system_review

Maximum PC said:
As with the Z-5500, the satellites are equipped with 3-inch, one-way drivers that must produce both high and midrange frequencies. Two-way configurations with discrete tweeters and midrange drivers, such as you’ll find in Corsair’s 2.1-channel SP2500 system, almost always deliver a more satisfactory sonic performance.

Anyway, this is the result of only 10 minutes or so of searching and research. More effort will likely yield a better result.

AV40s are a great choice for that price range.

Buying used stuff on Craigslist could be risk - make sure to audition the equipment before buying or just walk away

I found this neat jam:
http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/ele/2596163650.html

Speakers- it's a bit harder to something decent:
but I'd check these two (again - make sure you listed to them before purchase)

http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/ele/2545511919.html

but if you don't want to take chances - just get pair of new Infinity P163 - at $85 ea - you cant't go wrong with these
