Hard to beat this deal right now on NewEgg for the Linksys E3000-RM 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Router. ($46, free shipping) It's a refurb, but seems like a great deal.
NetWerkz - thanks for the response. I came to the same conclusion myself after writing that post. It looks like unless I swap CPUs out, I'm stuck w/ the 16GB ceiling as my i7 only supports unbuffered memory.
I've been looking for a compatible 8GB stick for my X8SIL-F as well. I have an i7 proc installed, which leads me toward unbuffered memory as well. I noticed today that NewEgg was advertising these:

$235 for 2x8GB.

To the question of 7200 vs 5400 being worth the extra $?? I don't think so for home media streaming use. The 5400s supposedly run cooler, which is a plus, though in actual experience, I don't find a huge difference in my case (I have 11 7200 RPM and 2 of the 5400 RPM drives). This might be...
Re: Amazon, in my experience, they're even better. All you have to do is select 'faulty/doesn't work' in their return options and you get the pre-paid label. I've never had them question something I sent back as broken.
To the last question re: performance and RAID, there was a review posted a couple of pages back. I think it's the best info available at this point. Since they're so new, I don't think there is a lot more specific RAID performance info available, but given the data in that review, I don't see...
Ok, so to answer my own question to odditory with a post from him on STH Forums:
For $60 / drive, I think it's worth taking a chance and doing some testing and I look forward to hearing what odditory's testing results in as well. Worst case, I might just start a new RAID vs mixing with my...
5K3000 2TB NewEgg Shell Shocker today for $60 after $10 rebate.
Odditory, to confirm, as far as you know, these are ok to mix/match with the previous version Hitachi 2TB in the same RAID array? If so, I'm going to be stocking up today. ;)
Agreed odditory, though FWIW I'm interested in the continuation of that discussion, so if one of you could please post the link to where you pick it up from here, I'll follow along there. Thanks.
I find them quite a bit louder than the WD Greens I was using previously. I ended up moving the server to a (ventilated) closet so I don't have to listen to them anymore, but compared to the greens I had before, I did notice a difference. I remember reading about these on NewEgg when first...
I'm assuming mixing/matching the 7k3000 2TB drives in a RAID array with the 7k2000 2TB drives is a bad idea? If that is the case, and they really are going to stop putting out the 7k2000s, I'm going to have to go on a shopping spree.
Thanks odditory, I'm not in an enormous hurry, but I do hate letting a good deal slip by me. I'll nab a few the next time around. I definitely appreciate the PM if you see a deal.
Ironically as the person who posted about the sale, I got totally blanked. :) I got there first thing Saturday morning in Austin and they were sold out. Fortunately I'm ~5TB away from running out of space on my current array, but still, annoying!
@egraphix - These are rock solid. If you look back for posts by odditory you'll see that he's running ~100 of them in various configurations and has never had drop out issues. I think these are about as safe as they come.
@Odditory -> I've been following your other threads re: dual linking the HP expander with a 6Gbps RAID card and the great resulting speeds. Do you know if the Chenbro is capable of dual linking? I see that it (the CK12803) has two inputs, one external, one internal, but I'm not sure if that...
Hi all - great low-power chip for sale. [SOLD]
Intel Pentium G6950
I bought this for a file server but caught a severe case of upgrad-itis and went for something more powerful. The CPU was purchased in June and used for a few months (never overclocked). It's now back in the original box...
For anyone curious, OCE completed today. Expansion from 8x2TB R6 to 10x2TB R6. Source was 80% full when expansion began. Total time: 152 hours (6 days, 8 hours) Performance was very poor at times during the expansion, but it's definitely usable. Most importantly though, the end result is...
Thanks odditory. I'm planning to add the two new drives to my array in a couple of weeks. Last time I extended my R6 from 7x2TB to 8x2TB it took ~3-4 days (on a Highpoint 4320), so I'm imagining it'll be the same or longer this time as well. I'll post back as info once it's done.
By the way, Fry's was selling the new model # (H3IK20003272SP), which from everything I can tell by reading online is still the same drive, but just an FYI for anyone picking one up that the model # and packaging have changed.
Viper - they work out of the box fine, though many do use the Hitachi disk diagnostics to fully test the drives before putting them into their raid setup.
re: your last question of mixing & matching with WD, I wouldn't do it. There are still lots of people with big RAID groups running fully on...
For posterity's sake (and anyone else struggling with this in the future), I figured out that Yahoo does let you send mail via its servers without using encryption. The relevant section is below:
The page here provides instructions confirming that (for now) port 587 is allowed to log in...
Which card are you asking about, the 4320 or the Chenbro? I did use the 4320 with the EADS drives, but have not tried the Chenbro with them as I sold them once I got my expander and went 100% to the Hitachi 2TB drives. Since I could no longer purchase the WD drives reliably that still allowed...
Late reply (I just found this searching for something else). I was the one who bought the Chenbro expander and yes, it works like a charm with the 4320. I still see them up on eBay fairly often, you could almost certainly grab one from there if you can't find them anywhere else.
When I was originally thinking about setting up my RAID with a mixed set of drives (same size, different manufacturers), I asked the same question you did.
I received a LOT of very strong opinions saying mixing/matching drives was a very bad idea if I valued the integrity of the RAID...
