Hi there,
I'm looking to purchase a new or used single slot GPU for hopefully less than $50. The onboard GPU on one of my desktops has recently been giving me artifacts, so I need something to drop in to replace it. This is not for gaming, strictly just for web browsing/youtube so a powerful...
Thanks for all the responses. I never knew that degrees werent even that important. Though, I'm still going to get one. Is computer science pretty much the encompassing degree? Or should I go for one more specialized on my interests?
I'm a sophomore in high school (15) , and I'm getting a head start on looking at colleges/careers. At this point, I have no idea what's "out there". I am mainly interested in the whole networking thing. And servers, datacenters, storage, maybe even HPC clusters, or network administration. It...
A friend asked me about building a computer for him. I asked him for a general budget, and he told me ~$3500. Though it can be anywhere around there.
Even though he has that budget, I'm not really trying to spend it all. Right now, he has a Dell XPS that was very good for the time. I dont...
I'm also looking into this. I Think im just gonna go with 3x Monoprice. Its cheaper, and you can move the monitors more.

Currently, I have this nice little WHS server. It does backups for all the computers in the house, as well as operating as a NAS and a small minecraft srever. It has dual core CPU with 4GB RAM.
However, I wanted to expand, so I got an AMD FX-8320, and 32GB of memory. I plan to run an ESXi...
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply. And would it have any effect if I passed a video card to the VM that I am using? or would that not really make a difference
And does this full screen console support multiple monitors? does vnc?
There's probablly a name for this, I just don't know exactly what it is called.
I just ordered parts for an ESXi whitebox. It has 8 cores, and 32GB RAM, so it should have plenty of performance for what I need it for. Something I want to do on it, is test out linux distros/play around with...
What cheapish, but good fan, would you recommend? I want to put 2 intake fans in the case?
This will be in my room, and its gonna be on while I sleep, so they have to be quiet. And I need to order from newegg
EDIT: The front panel takes 120mm fans
So, I've finally decided on AMD.
CPU: AMD FX-8320
MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3
Memory: G.SKILL 32GB 4x8GB 1866
And then a Card Reader and an SD Card
I already have a 400w Antec Neo Eco PSU, an Intel Pro/1000 PT Dual port NIC, A case, and Hard drives.
How does it look?
EDIT: And a cheap...
I just can't decide on the amd/intel issue. I definately want IOMMU support, because its just a good to have. If i were to go AMD, i would get the FX-8320 for $180. Though, if I went intel, I could get a used 2600k for ~$200. So the price difference isn't that huge.
Bulldozer/Piledriver CPUs...
Right now, I have 2x 2TB drives, 1x640GB and 2x 500GB. Right now, I'm using WHS's drive extender to merge them all into one volume. Would there be any way I can do something like that in ESXi? Or are there any RAID cards that support some kind of psuedo-raid like that? If not, is there still a...
I was thinking of running ESXi, with WHS running as a VM. Currently PC backups only take up 686GB on WHS. I was just going to dedicate a 1TB HDD to that VM. Though, now that I think about it, once I have my ESXi server running, the only thing I would be using WHS for is Backups. So I might just...
Right now, im running WHS directly on and Athlon x2 with 4GB RAM, and a couple of HDDs. I intend to upgrade my CPU/Mobo/RAM, so I can run a linux VM, and so I can play with Windows server. I plan to have 32GB RAM.
It runs 24/7. It'll be hosting a minecraft and terreria server, Home Media...
I'm kinda new to virtualization, so I'm not the most knowledgable on the subject, but...
I want to virtualize my home server, but there are a couple of different hypervisors to chose from. I've looked up comparisons on google, but all the results were for the full licensed versions.
So...
I understand that this question gets posted all the time, but Im still not exactly sure what to get.
I know that I should get one of those mPCIe to PCIe x1 adapters, but I don't know which intel mPCIe wireless card I should install into it.
Thanks.
Sorry for posting in an old(er) thread, but I didn't think that this deserves a new post.
Well, its been a while since I've installed pfSense, and its been pretty good. But it seems over complicated, at least for my skill level/knowledge. When I want to port forward something, all I want to do...
I just installed an HP nc360T into my home server, and I want to use both ethernet ports to get double the speed of a single 1gbt connection. Is there a way I can team 2 ethernet connections with DD-WRT?
My router is the WNDR3700
WHS has been great, and all, but I've grown out of it. I feel like it isn't advanced enough, and doesn't offer enough features. It almost feels restricted because it is made to be easy to use, and because its for a home enviroment. I want to move on to a more advanced OS like Windows Server 2008...
pfSense definately seems like a very good option, and I am going to try it out, but I started looking into the SBS alternatives, like ClearOS. It has a lot more features, like an FTP server, and a print server. As well as a clamAV antivirus. Does pfsense do antivirus as well as a firewall? Whats...
I'm no longer considering the full UTMs (untangle, astaro ), but I'm still curious about the sbs alternatives. What features could I get out of them? Do I even have powerful enough hardware for clearos or ebox?
As for pfsense, it is my number 1 consideration. Its lightweight, uses pf instead of...
I just finished my router build (Intel DN2800MT, 4GB memory, 32GB m4 SSD, HP NC360T NIC), but I'm still not sure which OS to load onto it. I currently have a 25/5 connection, but that could raise at anytime. There are about 10 devices on my network right now, but that number could increase at...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mostly gaming and web browsing
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
around 1300 still waiting on an exact price
3) Where do you live?
NJ
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM...
I was looking for an * port card on newegg, and the reviews said that it won't work with some OS's. Will it work with WHS? Also, hoes the RAID on the card. Is there any?
Thanks
Ok. I just received these drives a couple days ago from newegg, and I was wondering if they shipped with the new F/W or not. And how do I check that on WHS. If, not, where is the DL link, and how do I fix it. (I only read the first 2 pages)
Thanks guys
Thanks! Ordered them all!
One more question (kinda Off Topic). Is there a place where I can order a couple SATA cables, without them having an overly expensive price, or shipping price?
I prefer MSI as a company, and I am not a fan of ASUS. Also, I need lots of SATA ports, Onboard video, and PATA
EDIT: if you have another recommendation, please tell me
