Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

People seem to like the IBM M1015 card, but i still have not found out if it can work as an HBA card without RAID-0 for each disk and support smart (That is with linux and a stock kernel)

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

Unfortunately I have not solved this problem. If I disconnect every single drive from the expander the card boots ok, and then i reconnect them one by one so that the OS sees them. @golemcito with new kernels (2.6.38) everything works fine for me. If you have already bought this card then...

    SAS Expander Issues on Linux

First you subscribe to the mailing list http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-scsi Then you send an email to that list, describing your problem and attaching the relevant dmesg output. But first upgrade your kernel, chances are that it will solve your problem

    File/Media Server Build - FlexRAID 24TB Build

No get the ECC RAM because FlexRaid will process huge amounts of data and you dont want corrupted parity data when you need to restore a failed drive. Not to mention the fact that with ECC ram your system will have much better uptime and fewer crashes.

There are some patches that seem to be relevant, Jiri Slaby at 22/6, James Bottomley at 27/7, one from David Milburn at 6/8 and two from Dan Carpenter at 11/8

Need storage array advice. 12+ drives, raid 6?, controller raid cards?

Many people use the Norco 4020/4220 or 4224 cases. The Storage showoff thread has many good examples

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

After 5 days of testing, I can attest that mvsas with 2.6.35 works fine, with no errors, freezes or anything like that. I have an HP SAS Expander + 13x1.5TB single drives with JFS and no RAID and my OS is Arch Linux @Woutern83: I don't use RAID, so I cant offer anything on that front, but I...

Need storage array advice. 12+ drives, raid 6?, controller raid cards?

An HP SAS Expander + a cheap compatible SAS controller is probably the best for your needs. See the first post of the HP SAS Expander thread for more detail

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

Hello, do any of you guys get the Port 3 error? My SASLP-MV8 does not see any drives, takes ages to boot, and prints many port 3 errors. If I press any key, boot continues and i see all my drives under linux and everything works ok(It is just a PITA for a headless server). Disks are connected to...

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

That's good news. I just installed 2.6.35 on my system, seems that the mv_abort_task errors and subsequent controller freezes that i got when i was copying files with thunar have disappeared. Now I am trying all the other things that froze the controller, and will report back. PS. When i am...

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

That is very good news indeed. With 2.6.34 I can only use jfs, as btrfs and xfs result in the card locking the system(I don't use RAID). Furthermore, when using jfs, if I try to copy files via thunar (a graphical file manager), the card locks up, but when I use cp on bash there is no problem.

    Build-Log: 100TB Home Media Server

Yes they can be writable, and it works quite intelligently. For instance, if I have a movie in disk 3, and i go to its "union" folder and copy a subtitle to it, the file gets written on the same disk as the movie. I generally avoid copying big files to the union folder and prefer to write to the...

You can also use linux with aufs2, in order to merge the contents of your drives into one virtual drive. In fact, I have been using it for a long time and it works just fine. There probably is something like that for windows too, or maybe you can use libraries

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

A small correction here, the WD15EADS-00P8B0 drive is not on the controller but on a motherboard slot, so that explains why smartctl works without -T permissive. The other 6 drives on the SASLP are Seagate ST31500541AS and smartctl works without -T permissive on them too.

    Marvel AOC-SASLP-MV8 - 8 Sata PCI-E 4x non-raid controller card

I have installed an AOC-SASLP-MV8 on my system (arch linux amd64 2.6.33 with latest mvsas patch from Srinivas). I do not have any mdraid config, every drive has its own filesystem. Everything works fine, unless i try to boot with 8 disks. Then booting stalls during the mount disk phase and...

Supreme Commander 2 demo is released

I played the full game today, and it is a pure EPIC FAIL. This is not Supreme Commander 2, it is Supreme Commander Fischer Prize edition, for <5 years old. They took one of the best PC strategy franchises and dumbed it down so much that it is a total turnoff. The most major problems: The...

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

I am using arch linux installed on a USB stick that is backuped to another one every week or so. The system will be JBOD, and for data protection I use flexraid, but also trying out disparity. As for filesystems, btrfs looks good and has passed my tests, so I will be slowly migrating to it as well.

I just pulled the trigger on an HP SAS Expander, a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8, 2x 8087 to 8087 and 7x 8087 to 4 SATA fanout cables. I will use these on a Norco 4020 case, so I hope I got the right cables :)

    Encryption software.

I am using dm-crypt with LUKS on arch linux for my file server(filesystem is btrfs with compression enabled, and btw i am very happy with it). Every single disk is encrypted, save for a minimal boot/root partition on a usb stick.

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

As i am very interested in this card, i would like to ask: Which cost-effective SAS card should i buy in order to connect it to the HP SAS expander? My needs are: 1)Connecting 24 Internal sata drives on a Norco 4020. 2)No raid config, i just want the raw drives presented to me without me...

How much power do the 'green' drives save/use?

Seagate Barracuda LP's are great too, the 1.5TB version is incredibly cheap (105€ here in Greece) and _significantly_ cooler than the WD10EACS it replaced on my Norco 4020.
