I have my surrounds sitting next to the wall pointing up it right behind the couch, it sounds fine I had to adjust them a bit but it works. Our room layout is just such that there is no good place for the surrounds to go.

On the 6100 you may want to find out if its possible to use other speakers than the ones it comes with. I am sure it will be a good setup, but make sure you can upgrade it unless you will be happy with it in the long run.
