I think my x58 has finally bit the dust.
After randomly turning off and see my overclock drop from 4.6ghz to stock, I can't seem to even to get it to post now. I swapped out RAM and power supply, and the only thing left to test is the CPU and motherboard. It was really only serving secondary...
4.84ghz without the delid (but admittedly very high temps).
There is a local business that offers delidding services for $50 (and he guarantees his work). To me, that was a better value than me and my shaky hands to attempt the delid myself.
Looks like I will be replacing our remote sensing computer in the lab!
Depending on price, I may even put it in my personal machine (although the 7820x at 5ghz is a beast in its own right)
Personally, I would go for the 7600k or even the 6600k, and overclock. I know you said you have a generic AIR cooler, but your wife's board is capable of changing multipliers, and you can still probably get an extra 400mhz out of it.
There is a posting on my local Kijiji selling a 6600k for...
That's amazing. I don't think I have ever seen a 2-1 PC outside of what Linus did recently in the new Corsair 900D (or whatever the latest model is).
My contribution - 7 computers and 6 monitors in what is a smallish sized bedroom. Until my basement is finished, my office is relegated to a...
That sucks man, hope that it is just the board - it is very rare to destroy the CPU. Did you ever get it to post after the delid? Or have you yet to confirm that it was successful?
The only reason I upgrade is because I want to play with a new toy, not because I genuinely need it.
My overclocked 3930k in my sig is the equivalent of a stock 7800x, and actually pulls in a higher CB multi threaded score than a stock 5960x.
x58 and LGA2011v1 were so much fun to overclock.
Decided to fool around and got 5.03ghz reasonably stable. I say reasonaby because the ambient temp is less than 15c (I have my window open), so it definitely isn't a day to day overclock:
My most recent system 7820x @4.95ghz (it is mostly stable at 5ghz, but it crashed during PRIME) =
CB Multi= 2171
CB Single = 218 (the system turbo boosts to 5.05 during single core load)
Firestrike Physics: 26355
My [email protected]
CB Multi = 921
CB Single = 188
Firestrike Physics = 13100...
Like you, I was ambivalent to de-lid, the thought of killing a $600 processor made me balk. Luckily (at least in my area), there are numerous individuals offering delid service for only $40.
I don't think I would have had the guts to do it myself, but I was extraordinarily pleased with both...
Just a regular Corsair H115 AIO - I run the fans at a fixed profile of 60%, which is kind of loud, but given that there are several other computers in the room, it sort of gets drowned out.
1.9v
You were right about the CB score being low - I had left MESH on Auto (2.4ghz), and bumping it up to 3Ghz resulted in a score of 2120. There are diminishing returns to overclocking the MESH speed though - anything about 3.2ghz, and performance started to decrease. I wasn't throttling...
