1366 x58 Xeon Enthusiast overclocks club

I think my x58 has finally bit the dust. After randomly turning off and see my overclock drop from 4.6ghz to stock, I can't seem to even to get it to post now. I swapped out RAM and power supply, and the only thing left to test is the CPU and motherboard. It was really only serving secondary...

AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen Threadripper 32 Cores Confirmed

4.84ghz without the delid (but admittedly very high temps). There is a local business that offers delidding services for $50 (and he guarantees his work). To me, that was a better value than me and my shaky hands to attempt the delid myself.

AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen Threadripper 32 Cores Confirmed

Looks like I will be replacing our remote sensing computer in the lab! Depending on price, I may even put it in my personal machine (although the 7820x at 5ghz is a beast in its own right)

Best i5 value (used) in Z270 platform

Personally, I would go for the 7600k or even the 6600k, and overclock. I know you said you have a generic AIR cooler, but your wife's board is capable of changing multipliers, and you can still probably get an extra 400mhz out of it. There is a posting on my local Kijiji selling a 6600k for...

    Post Your Workstations 2018

That's amazing. I don't think I have ever seen a 2-1 PC outside of what Linus did recently in the new Corsair 900D (or whatever the latest model is). My contribution - 7 computers and 6 monitors in what is a smallish sized bedroom. Until my basement is finished, my office is relegated to a...

Damn 7820x is impressive (my own chip)

That sucks man, hope that it is just the board - it is very rare to destroy the CPU. Did you ever get it to post after the delid? Or have you yet to confirm that it was successful?

7 Years Ago Today Intel Launched the Core i7-2600K

The only reason I upgrade is because I want to play with a new toy, not because I genuinely need it. My overclocked 3930k in my sig is the equivalent of a stock 7800x, and actually pulls in a higher CB multi threaded score than a stock 5960x. x58 and LGA2011v1 were so much fun to overclock.

Damn 7820x is impressive (my own chip)

Decided to fool around and got 5.03ghz reasonably stable. I say reasonaby because the ambient temp is less than 15c (I have my window open), so it definitely isn't a day to day overclock:

My most recent system 7820x @4.95ghz (it is mostly stable at 5ghz, but it crashed during PRIME) = CB Multi= 2171 CB Single = 218 (the system turbo boosts to 5.05 during single core load) Firestrike Physics: 26355 My [email protected] CB Multi = 921 CB Single = 188 Firestrike Physics = 13100...

not willing to delid 7700k and void warranty

Like you, I was ambivalent to de-lid, the thought of killing a $600 processor made me balk. Luckily (at least in my area), there are numerous individuals offering delid service for only $40. I don't think I would have had the guts to do it myself, but I was extraordinarily pleased with both...

Skylake-X (Core i9) - Lineup, Specifications and Reviews!

Just a regular Corsair H115 AIO - I run the fans at a fixed profile of 60%, which is kind of loud, but given that there are several other computers in the room, it sort of gets drowned out.

Help me decide: 1950x vs. 7900x vs. 7820x (Mixed Use Computer)

1.9v You were right about the CB score being low - I had left MESH on Auto (2.4ghz), and bumping it up to 3Ghz resulted in a score of 2120. There are diminishing returns to overclocking the MESH speed though - anything about 3.2ghz, and performance started to decrease. I wasn't throttling...

Help me decide: 1950x vs. 7900x vs. 7820x (Mixed Use Computer)

Finally put together everything and got the system up to 4.83ghz (using an 800mhz AVX offset). Cinbench score of 2077, and Firestrike physics of 25240. Very Pleased with the purchase - haven't had a chance to do any modeling work, but will do some tests once I migrate over some files. PS...

Help me decide: 1950x vs. 7900x vs. 7820x (Mixed Use Computer)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to get the 7820x because NewEgg had it on sale for $660CAD. Put together an entirely new system, but will move over my 1070 (and put the GT710 in the 3930k as backup - it will be turned into an ftp server, so no need for heavy graphics power). I'll be...

Wow, thanks for the offer! If you could just open this file and see if it loads your cores, that would be great. This is one of the smaller files that I work with, and it still locks my computer every time I try to update a formula...

Hmm, when I run some of my calculations - it is loading all 6 cores at 100% - (so it appears to be using all cores). Local retailers have dropped the price on thread ripper by 30% - too bad the motherboards are so expensive :(

Help me decide: 1950x vs. 7900x vs. 7820x (Mixed Use Computer)

Hi all, I recently posted about whether I should upgrade my 3930k @4.9 to Coffee lake, but was ultimately dissuaded from doing so due to the marginal improvement for the cost (30% increase in performance for $1000 platform switch). However, I have decided that I really do need more cores...

    Upgrade 3930k @ 4.9ghz?

1.43v, but Load Line Calibration is set to extreme (so it will occasionally spike to 1.47 during load). What really helped my OC was setting CPU PLL *lower*. Default is 1.8v, but I run it at 1.65v - I couldn't tell you why it helps my OC, but I remember from overclocking my x58 that people...

    Upgrade 3930k @ 4.9ghz?

Thanks for the input everyone - I'll be honest, I love overclocking these older systems (x58, x79). While my love of tinkering has never gone away (first overclock was a celeron 300A), my patience and free time to play games is all but gone. While I will always buy a bunch of titles during...

    Upgrade 3930k @ 4.9ghz?

Hi all, So a bit of a strange question - I recently obtained a 3930k, RIVE combo that clocks extremely well (4910mhz). I had essentially been waiting for Coffee Lake to come back in stock (8700k specifically), but now I am starting to question whether I actually need the upgrade. While I...

    Gtx 1080 ti & old i7 920 @ 3.6ghz bench

I can attest that the x58 platform is still extremely viable. While a [email protected] is somewhat of a low overclock (I ran my DO at 4.4Ghz for years), my [email protected] was faster than a stock 5930k and was neck and neck with a 6800k. I actually used it as my primary gaming rig for a while despite...

1366 x58 Xeon Enthusiast overclocks club

Man, I really lucked out with my p6t-SE - I can run BCLK up to 224mhz. Not bad for what was a budget board. Cross flashed the Asus P6T WS PRO Bios to force 23x multiplier (although I don't use it). Currently run the system 24/7 as my server @21x221 (4634Mhz) using 1.4Vcore, 1.4VTT. Temps get...

How good is SLI support in newer games?

Hi all, The money I had originally ear marked for a Ryzen upgrade has been burning a hole in my pocket (While Ryzen is an amazing platform, I think my Haswell at 4.5Ghz may be faster in games - which will be the primary function of this machine). Currently I have an overclocked Gtx 1070 and...

Upgrading to Ryzen, what is your old/soon to be replaced system

Replacing my Haswell in sig with Ryzen 1700. Probably will be slower in games based on current benchmarks, but a) I wanted a new toy and b) having multithreaded performance for data analysis work will minimize my use of the 4960x or x5660. Still keeping the Haswell system a backup gaming rig...

    290X to R9 Nano?

I have both - unless space is a severe constraint (or you get a killer second hand deal which is why I have mine), there is no percetable difference in performance. An overclocked 290x is bascially within striking distance of the nano. As an example, using one 290x overclocked to 1200/1600...

So I went with the i7 7700k instead of the Ryzen 1800+

I don't think I have ever had a personal install go seamlessly - it's almost a rights of passage for something to fuck up (my earliest memory of this was trying to install the Global Win Fop 38 cooler on an AMD Duron - you had to apply an insane amount of pressure with a flat head screw driver...

    Worthwhile mobo swap?

Out of curisoity, why did you upgrade in the first place? An overclocked 4770k is pretty much just as fast as a 6700k, and in games, they are literally identical. As for your question, a motherboard swap won't do much in the way of changing your computing experience. As others have pointed...

1366 x58 Xeon Enthusiast overclocks club

I don't have the heart to part with my x58 setup. While it is curretly collecting dust as a "media/backup" computer, I will still occassionally run benches at 4.6ghz to see how it compares with Broadwell E etc. If you can get $400 for your current setup, a Ryzen 1700 is almost a no brainer...

Intel Kaby Lake Core i7-7700K IPC Review @ [H]

This is amazing info - I was always curious if we were to compare apples to apples (different generation at a fixed frequency), what the difference in IPC would be. out of curiosity, do you know why there are differences (albeit minor) when comparing the same generation? (i.e. a 5820k, 4770k...

5820k Stock vs [email protected] (Gaming only)

As an update, I kept my 4770k. I did a test on Kijiji to see whether anyone was interested in a workstation C612 1U motherboard, and got no bites (even at a heavily discounted $150) So basically, I would be stuck using a stock 5820k (this is probably more than enough for my purposes, but I...

How much better are the new processors compared to my i7 920?

Buy 6 core Xeon for under $100 on ebay. Get an SSD (even at half speed, it is a night and day difference between a mechanical drive) Add another 12 gigs of ram (so 18 total) Overclock Xeon to 4.2Ghz (or more) For about $250, you will have a system that keeps pace with pretty much any modern...

5820k Stock vs [email protected] (Gaming only)

No clue - I'm not entirely sure how he came into possession of a workstation board in the first place. My suspicion it was a pull from a refurbished server, and he just repurposed it. I do know that despite being DDR4, it is identical speed to the kit I currently have in my 4770k system...

5820k Stock vs [email protected] (Gaming only)

Hi guys, A colleague of mine offered an interesting proposition - he would give me his 5820k/board/ram in exchange for my 4770k combo (specs in sig). This seems like a no brainer, but here's the catch - the 2011 motherboard is a workstation board that apparently offers no overclocking...
