Hopefully someone out there has experience with the WinTV2K application.
I had WinTV2K installed from the CD that came with my WinTV GO pci card. Combined with WinScheduler (also from the install CD) it all worked perfectly fine with WindowXP, as I could schedule shows to be recorded as MPG...

Use services.msc to disable services you don't want running.
Use msconfig to disable startup programs from running when you boot up, of which, all of them can be unchecked/disabled.

Anyway, I haven't played a caster in the last year I've played. Yet, I rarely see illusionists and have read about them having gotten nerfed pretty bad.
