Gamers Nexus vs LinusTechTips: Smackdown

GN going for the jugular is odd. Even more odd is the next time he sees Linus in person lol that's gonna be a doozy 😐 haha
The only thing that is odd is LTT being allowed to behave the way they do without accountability.
Not wanting to spend $100-500 CAD to properly review something out of their $100,000,000 CAD corporation is beyond shameful, especially when it can potentially destroy a small startup company.

Haven't followed it much, but the LTT response is a bit disappointing. I've long considered them not as good as some of the better reviewers and this isn't helping them.

I unsubbed from all their channels. I don't rely on a single outlet for information and I found them pretty entertaining but the whole Billet Labs prototype thing was just insulting.

The double down response posted on the LTT forums was just icing on the cake.

I cannot imagine the Consumer reports model working, it is too late and not what we want from LTT.

Can you imagine starting tomorrow, no we would never review an item we did not bought in a store ourselves, will never engage in some nda-embargo with anyone, never have an entity near or far engaged in review ever engaged in content that was provided by a company (access, product, interviews....) the really basic you do not need to be a journalist to know all of that.

This will lead to terrible content, reviews many weeks after product are launched with hundreds of reviews already, nothing much interesting ever, you cannot really be in the news, entertainment and serious reviews at the same time, LTT should stay a Bon Appetit-Singing competition where the food-singing is not the really point, the tech is just a reason to have an office show occurring.

They should make some effort but I am not sure they should ever pretend to have the first journalistic integrity, it is a field that was build by non journalist with 0 journalistic background institution involved and it's a bit too far you need to not be serious journalist to compete, a video denouncing LTT bad journalistic behaviour did not even do the very basic, again not having to have spent time in journalistic school to know ultra basic step to contacting LTT for comments on all the allegation they were about to do. It is a field where it is considered ok to respect a company embargo (let alone review guideline).
In that case they should just drop the whole "lab" and "consumer focused" bit.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.
They all do, any of those reviewer would refuse the invitation to visits lab, have interviews with product developers, free and more importantly before public launch product to review ? Or product placement that are coming from the industry they review ?

They all have to balance their cake eating and still having cake, the moments you have tech ads on your relatively small tech ads review channel you already obviously get outside journalistic behaviour and on that balancing act, the moment you ever respect an embargo date or any company condition (you should never be in communication with them for that to even exist to start with) you have obviously crossed the line.

Having a good lab would be an excellent tool to be able to counteract the issues named, script that would always enforce setting, detect issues, more objective numbers giving less place to bias, make maybe possible without having to take as many shortcut to have that volume of videos.

Same thing for cultivating a consumer focus ethos and discourse, that one of those balancing force in the other direction. Having a tech tv shows (where they watercool stuff, distribute network between building, build storage, etc...) completely separated by a review entity (that would hate each other over time if things goes well) could be nice, but there so much content to be made about automating and perfecting the reviews process and so much of the content is about the challenge of making reviews that it would destroy the channel.

Take hardware unboxed situation with Nvidia they had about not having Dlss or RT benchmark in some Ampere review, it would have never existed with an old school newspaper review section that would have never spoke with Nvidia, they would have waited, bought the card in a store (or ebay in this case) with their own money, made the review they wanted and that it. Now that you have a misadventure with a company, how can you review their product with no bias, who can watch your review about that company that would not assume bias ? Just having a twitter or any public presence that talk about tech (and ever get into a fight about it) should not exist as well.

LTT is trying to have their cake and eat it too. Linus attracts viewers for tech reviews then falls back on being 'just tech-tainment' or whatever you want to call it.

We've seen this stunt before with comedy news shows such as the Dailey Show where they would report news then waive off all accountability as they are just "a comedy show" even if their reporting had real world consequences for innocent parties.

Are we now at a point in society where "tech nerds" and "social media" influencers / creators are becoming f'ing gangsta ?... my goodness..

Some MMA/boxing faceoffs, matchups are cringe enough.. now this

Louis Rossmann is a big pro repair guy. Though he's more about right to repair and NYC real estate than repairing Macbooks, which is what he was known for. I've crossed paths with him on a subject about Hector Martin and his asshole nature like the guy from GrapheneOS. Mainly about how Hector Martin is all about that Patreon money to slowly get Linux working on Apple M series hardware. It's been 3 years and Asahi Linux isn't what I'd call a daily driver. There's a lot of open source projects that seem like they're giving the community free software when there's actually a business plan behind it. The only difference is they don't have a boss to report to.
Rossman moved his home and business to Texas at the end of last year. He relocated to Austin.

WARNING.. very contrarian view point ahead - After watching the full version of the first Hardware Unboxed Podcast where HU Steve says he often talks to GN Steve, and then watching GN's Hardware News for Steve's comments on Linus' LTT Forum responses, I am starting to get the vibe that.. perhaps.. this is a setup for some elaborate prank of some kind that hasn't played itself out as of yet. Just starting to seem too familiar with things I have seen in the past..

If I am right, you heard it here first!! If I am completely and totally wrong, then please forget you ever read this!!

Not sure if coinidence or not but the LTT Forums have been down for the past few hours.

It is really the very minimum for GN to contact Linux for comments, but GN is not a journalist and do not pretend to be and I imagine its audience do not imagine it to be either, it is just a show.
The only reason Linus wanted GN to contact them first, would have been to prevent them from releasing the video. It's not like LTT would change their ways if that would happen. I really doubt this is gonna change LTT going forward. What it will do is remind people that clicking on their videos is not worth your time.
Don't forget your LTT Screwdriver for only $70.
I know the perfect place to put it.

He still talks about NYC a lot. His hatred for that place must be high. I don't blame him, I live near NYC.

Not the only possible reason, would have wanted for example to be clearer that the selling auction was a charity one from a miscommunication that they agreed with step to reimburse the custom prototyping (which GN would have been free to include or not, with the response from the startup to let the audience judge by themselve).

Has for clicking the video not being worth your time that like saying a cooking show it is not worth your time for x,y,z reason, that it a really strange point of view, do you like the show or not. You do not need youtube videos and certainly not LTT for reviews when you need one

I don't think Louis Rossman hates the people nor culture of NYC, but the inane bureaucracy, municipal corruption, and constant awareness of greed of downtown real estate just got to him. The fact he can't stop talking about it means he wishes NYC would have worked out for his business.

I actually really enjoyed his videos of touring post-pandemic downtown NYC. The amount of empty or unused buildings implying businesses were drying up was a real eye opener.

Many "tech-tubers" seem to exist on drama and those who have some degree of success start to get a huge head about them as if the companies they review/find problems with need to kiss the ring or else they'll turn their slavering hordes of consumers against them. Maybe I'm just getting old and I remember there was always some drama, but things were different when the previous generation of "top tier" tech review sites were operating including [H].
Things were much more subdued when we had "consoles" being smashed on stage.

The bigger LTT gets the dumber and more douche bag they get. I don't love GN or HU that much either but I am well sick of LTT... youtube being the main venue of Hardware reviews is so much worse than back in the day when tech sites were up and running ..like [H] and toms / ars when they actually didn't suck.

That was completely debunked in GN's video just posted today and screenshots of it posted in this thread already. You've got some serious blinders on.

This is Steve's strength. If there's something negative to say about a product, service or person, he'll have a full write up finished by lunch.
We have to always remember, never wish for someone else to fail, because the failure of the person that wishes it will be greater.
So true. GN Steve the definition of a double edged ⚔️ on one side of the slice he's defending the consumer and brand or company and amidst the same slice chopping your whole ass dome piece off!
Don't piss off Steve or it's...

What debunked ? I as a watcher of the GN video I did not understood that the auction was for a charity, one had to know. He confirmed not asking for comments it was not debunked as for Linus having decided to reimburse them how can you debunk that, how would one know ? We just knew he have not yet do it or confirmed it to the company, which GN would have been free to include and let the viewer decide if LTT is lying about it or not.

Even terribly bad journalist ask for comments (they do it with short notice and in a catch you way, but they still do it)

Auction vs selling is semantics and deflecting away from the actual issue at hand. The net result is the same, and the whole bit about charity is an appeal to emotion to attempt to lessen how badly they screwed up.

https://hardforum.com/threads/gamers-nexus-vs-linus-tech-tips-cage-fight.2029918/post-1045711107- 18 posts before yours. LMG did not reach out to Billet Labs for compensation until after GN posted their video, thereby misrepresenting the situation in their response. Their response implied they had already offered Billet Labs monetary compensation before the GN video was released.

This pattern of deflecting, misdirecting, and lying should not be encouraged nor defended.

I listened to the WAN show this week and Linus seemed to address it pretty well; he essentially reprimanded the tech that blasted GN and Hardware Unboxed in that tech tour and apologized for it on the WAN show. But I guess GN took that as an invite to destroy him with a 45 min critique of his business and every misstep he could find in the last year or so.
Linus auctioned off some block some company gave him - it wasn't even released yet - apparently, it was a prototype. It caused a lot of problems and Linus ignored the company's attempts to contact until Steve from GN made a video.

He didn't 'address anything well.'

I'm not surprised. He's always seemed like a smug type of person. Yet, he became really popular. Well, that's what happens, I guess.

It's gets more hypocritical than that. You can look at his library and find countless times he went after companies for offering a bad product/service.
He makes it a duty to rip apart pre-built PC companies causing them to suffer financially, but what TT did is going too far. Ridiculous.

This is about his (GN) opinions/thoughts being challenged. He's mad.
So of course Mr. Drama goes into his textbook private investigator mode.

Yes so maybe you choose to not say it in your video, that irrelevant, how it should work

You write an article that involve party A making claim about an other party B (and party A would have human nature telling story that put the other one in a bad light, it gave it bad reviews).
You send the article you wrote to party B asking them if they have comments, precision they want to make
You can go back to party A if they agree with the other side of the story, you can dismiss it, you can try to double check the claim.

But obviously GN is not a journalist, no one working for him is, it is not a news organization, nor a new channel and its audience don't really care. And this does not work well with video format (nor the speed of youtube channels, journalism is boring, very costly, slow and hard), obviously, you can send the script if you have one, but it would not have all (image, tone, etc...).
LMG did not reach out to Billet Labs for compensation until after GN posted their video
Yes, I saw all that, it does not mean they did not have decided that it would reimbursed them, and it was not just in the time in between a decision is made and it is all finalised and Billet Labs was contacted about it, a video about it can speed up the process or LMG could be lying about it, you can let your audience decide.

Now that the ES is gone there is no way for Billet Labs to ever recover the opportunity and R&D costs spent developing the sample in the first place. The money gained from the auction is not going to be able to cover the total costs spent developing the ES.
Well, LTT could ask for a court order to return the block from the winner of the auction, since technically it was an unlawful sale. The said person would of course be entitled to their money back (from LTT, not the charity), in order to make both parties whole.

Of course, if the block is lost, damaged, or has gone through multiple hands, it could be difficult or impossible to reclaim. But they do have avenues with which to pursue the issue, legally (if a simple letter and exchange doesn't work.
