The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Official Thread

As for the combat, it is far from the best, but it works. What really annoys me, at the moment is the fact that Geralt sometimes auto targets. He'll sometimes cast igni towards a different direction, attack a different enemy than the one that he's next to, and worst off, he'll dodge with reference to his target, meaning instead of dodging towards the top of the screen, hell dodge into the target. THAT is hella frustrating.

Yeah the targeting/locking is really bad. It's hard to lock onto the enemy you want in the first place if there are several, and when you kill that one it will either drop the lock or randomly lock onto another one, even if they are behind you or something. Doesn't really make sense.

BTW... there are 36 different endings, based on so many decisions, that no way for "save/load" at end fight to get them all. Got to play the game for 36 times :)

Speaking of save/load I realized that it's an easy trap to fall into - to roll back and try a different decision. Slowly it became apparent that the key to just enjoying the game is making the decision, owning it, and living with the consequences. Backing up to make a different choice cheapens the gameplay experience (duh) but it took a few times to sink in.

And the other thing is that you're fucked no matter which way you go. Its a dark, evil world where things are not what they seem and Geralt just happens to be riding through it. That sweet woman of gentle disposition you thought you just "saved'? She's out prowling the countryside spreading disease and destruction and hitting babies with a tire iron. That monster you just slayed for the "good" of the village? ... was the only thing keeping order and sanity there. I'm speaking hypothetically to avoid spoiling anything, but you get the idea.

However, the fact that what first appear as simple choices can turn into an existential crisis once you understand the ramifications a bit more is, to me, the mark of great writing.

It's all about the L-stick. He will target whomever is in the direction of the L-stick at the time you press the key for that action. Haven't bothered with the KB/M controls but I assume the principle is the same for the mouse or whatever. So if you're stepping back after a roll, sometimes you will cast your sign backwards. Once you get the hang of it, nothing is "bad" about it, however.

excellent article over at Eurogamer...

What can we learn from The Witcher 3 "downgrade" fiasco?

the downgrade conspiracies have given way to some understandings of the challenges facing developers and the trades they have to make during production...So what actually happened?...what's clear is that early on in development, The Witcher 3 underwent a massive overhaul to its core rendering technology in order to deliver on the developer's vision for a dynamic open world...the first mistake was showcasing its vision for the game before it was actually functioning - the studio simply didn't know if what it was showing was even possible, as the latest iteration of the firm's REDEngine was still deep in development...prefacing the 2013 trailer by saying that it was in-game material was clearly a misstep when the reality was that The Witcher 3 as we would come to experience it wasn't in a playable state at the time

CD Projekt Red are hardly the worst offenders when it comes to using unrepresentative assets - indeed, one way or another, the team does its best to show us actual real-time code - but clearly the idea of using 'sexed up' media in modern video game marketing is nothing new, and it's a practise that really needs to change...

This. All of this.

This may have been answered but I don't feel like looking through the thread. Is Witcher 2 worth playing through or should I skip over it and go straight to 3? I did about 10 hours and most of the combat really bored me. I thought Witcher 1 had much better gameplay.

i think you answered it yourself.

Dont play a game you think is boring.

You are fine jumping into 3.

Though it wouldn't hurt to do a quick catch up on the story/characters, I found these videos to be helpful:

30 minutes of your time is all it takes.

Two is actually pretty fun once you understand that it's an intermediate between 1's real-time turn-based combat and actual real-time combat. But there's a combat overhaul, too, that TaintedSquirrel mentioned before. The game is well-worth 10+ hours of gameplay.

lmao

I think someone else posted a video of themselves doing that to the three bodies hung side by side right down the hill from the beginning area when you get your horse.

Didn't see any difference, forced 16x in drivers and cfg.

What I did see now that I have SweetFX, is this profile I'm using basically removes the blur. Or at least makes it much much more subtle, and only on things quite far in the background.

Don't see how anyone can play with sharpening off and no SweetFX. Every tree's leaves just look out of focus from like 10ft away, and other textures look like a blur from relatively close distances as well.

Weird, I forced it to 8x and it completely removed the blurriness. I mean, it's immediately evident and I'm not sure why it's not working for you. Didn't ask or check your sig but maybe it's an AMD thing. For the record I'm running low sharpening in addition to AF but even without the sharpening it's painfully obvious. Wish I could be of more help to you, might be a driver thing or maybe we are describing different things, not sure.

im starting to run into a lot of quests that are bugged, haven't really had many (any?) in my first 25 hours, but now its like every fourth one.. (searching online confirms its a bug for everyone).

Swinging a dead body... that's so messed up. But at the same time, hilarious.

Yea, I just hit my second bugged quest.... though I might've hit more, just reloaded and didn't really noticed. I opened the chest before it told me to open, so ...... the quest can't finish.

Noob question - what's the keybind for taking screenshot? PrtScn doesn't work and I don't see anything in keybinds that can be used.

If you have it on steam, I believe you can go into the settings and set a key, default should be F12.

I am loving gwent. I have never played any collectible card games before. is it based on anything?

Meh. Doesn't really matter anyway. The game looks great from my perspective, and that's what it's all about. Hope everyone else can find their happy place :).

If not, this game seems truly epic beyond the visuals anyway.

-snip-

Weak. I got around 160 or something before. And it wasn't even with those pull all similar cards out cards.

Funny how they wasted like all of their cards, pretty much ensuring victory for you in the last round.

loot/ignite fix :
edit C:\Users\%username%\Documents\The Witcher 3\input.settings

replace
(Action=Extinguish)

with
(Action=Extinguish,State=Duration,IdleTime=0.3)
and

(Action=Ignite)
with
(Action=Ignite,State=Duration,IdleTime=0.3)

from reddit, this version works on keyboard or controllers.

now you can spam loot, but to ignite you have to hold the button down

^ Nice. It works. Did a Find/Replace on all since there are many instances in that file.

Another convenience I noticed today is you can hold the Start button on the controller to bring the map up straightaway. Then just tap it again to get rid of it. I assume its same for whatever keyboard key normally brings up the menu.

Cool, didn't know that one. Need to dig into the cfg and swap start/select. 40 hours in and I still constantly select the wrong one. Backwards to every other game.

I was trying to insert the Witcher 2 bind for hide/unhide HUD in W3 files, but couldn't get it to work unfortunately. Hope CDPR makes this available in a patch. Would love to play on my plasma with a silky smooth 60fps.

Well I just got this and installed it last night. Played a few hours.

HOLY SHIT BATMAN! The visuals are absolutely stunning. Having a great time with it. Everything is maxed, and my 290x and 5820k is barely breaking a sweat. Game is very well done.

I'm really liking the combat. Not sure why some people were bitching about it. The magic skills are great so far, even at the very beginning. I never played previous Witcher games before, and I was able to easily learn and navigate through things.

So many skill trees. Where are you putting points?

you can respec later for 1000 gold, and money is pretty easy later on. whatever you do, it only applies if you put it in the boxes on the right. I think there are 3 types of mutagens (that I have so far), vitality, sign intensity & attack power. match colors for up to 3x the effect. I think 70 is the level cap, probably another 15 points from shrines, so you will be able to climb 2 paths in the skill trees.

lol, I was thinking this too. I'm around level 4 and I did the first 5 points into fast attack, 1 into health regen (which is minimal on max diff but I wanted some kind of regen).

I use the shield spell and fire spell a lot now, but I wonder if the slow spell would be good maxed out later on...

Also, I might have missed this being posted here but nVidia has a really good tweaking guide to enhance viewing distance, density, shadows, mipmap quality and such:
http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gu...ormance-and-tweaking-guide#config-file-tweaks

I think my TiX SLI is running around 60% usage. I can bump up a few settings past Ultra.

Its a damn good thing the main story quest isnt on a timer. The past 2 nights, I've sat down and said "Ok, time to catch up to Ciri", and then 4 hours later, I'm 200 miles away from where that next quest marker is and up to my neck in blood from killing other things.

To quote a Family Guy episode (+1 if you get the reference), "Oh look a piece of candy! Oh look a piece of candy! Oh look a piece of candy!". :p

I try to work on the main story, and then bump into someone or something that needs help, and its like I lose control of my mind/fingers and click to get the quest, and end up on a tangent 200 miles from where I was in a matter of a couple of hours, any thought of Ciri long forgotten until I realize the time and go "Damnit, its time for bed", and remember that poor Ciri was completely forgotten about for another night. :(

She'll probably smack me for taking so long if and when I ever do catch up to her. :p

Having so much fun though with it! :D

Ok so I started playing it last night. I'm on the grifen quest now.

I downloaded and installed the first two DLCs. But I can't figure out how to use the Temerian Armor set? Any tips?

Also, how do tell which is the main quests, and which are the side quests?

The quest menu has it labeled as main and secondary quests. Not sure about the armor. If you accept a side quest you need to select it in the quest menu for it to activate.

Two new dlc's out now, new look for Yennefer and a new quest. Just go to the "view more dlc" tab in steam to get them.

The Temerian armor is found on the Merchant in White Orchard (the one near the main village, that you help early on, near the fast travel sign there.

He sells it, there's both an armor set for you as well as a temerian themed horse gear (Blinders/saddles/saddle bags).

Barbers can be found in Oxenfurt and Novigrad, that I know of at least. Oxenfurt is easiest to get to earlier in the game (once you get out of White Orchard), it's just to the west a bit across the river, but you will need to do a quest in order to get a "pass" to get into either city, which you can do around lv 6'ish (I did at least).

question about the follow up to the baron quest:
so hes off with his wife to some healer and the guy he left in charge basically let the whole army lose and they are all over velen fucking shit up with about 50 new question marks popping up. what do i get out of clearing that all out? i was so proud of exploring everything and having the map cleared then this shit happened.

also, dont ever fuck with guards, i thought well, those bastards, ill show em, and they turned out to be 3 level 36 dudes and wiped the floor with me, taking about 2000 coins from me
