Nexus 6 speculation

So I bit the bullet and ran through the decryption process (PITA - have to factory reset your phone by erasing user data - do it when you first get the phone before you set it up)

...and holy shit what a difference. Phone flies and I've also noticed significantly less heat coming from the back while installing 90+ apps.

I'm really interested to see how much better my battery life will be.

edit: also reclaimed 3 gb of space

I really wish this was made optional in the default ROM..

It's absolutely crazy. I am stunned at what a difference this has made.

If you are going to implement encryption, at least do it right and use the hardware that qualcomm already put there, not some resource intensive software alternative.

FunFun fact.

Kernel devs have found that the software encryption is no slower than using the hardware chip that is available. At least as of yet.

Interesting.

People have been taking encryption off their Nexus 9's as well and noticing a much smaller difference. Wonder what the differences between Tegra and Snapdragon are that shows such a difference...

Implementation is what is boils down to.

Straight up kicking on the hardware chip results in similar or worse performance than the software path according to the dev of LeanKernel...which Qualcomm or Motorola deserve a Gold Star for engineering a hardware encrypt module that performs worse than software.

That being said, one fellow has posted screenshots of an encrypted Nexus 6 trading blows with an unencrypted N6 in a benchmark...although there doesn't seem to be a consensus on how he's done it. And it isn't out in the wild yet to try either.

I was running Slim ROM for a bit. Now running Liquid Smooth with Lean Kernel.

Good stuff, I will check it out. Things already seem pretty speedy for me so I am really curious if I would notice the decryption speed boost.

For those curious about a couple of tempered glass screen protectors:

Xtremeguard Original vs Xtremeguard REVISED vs Orzly

My Orzly finally came in after ordering back in November and then sending them an email that it never arrived and it finally came today. My revised Xtremeguard came a little while ago and then I still have my original Xtremeguard.

The original Xtremeguard is on the left, revised Xtremeguard is in the middle and the Orzly is on the right.

The original X is the largest and the reason why it did not adhere is that it was made to cover the entire glass portion of the phone so it was sitting off the rounded edge. It came loose in a white foam type wrap.

The revised X is slightly smaller in height and width so it covers only the flat portion of the screen. It also comes in a hard plastic case.

The Orzly is the smallest of the bunch and will obviously only cover the flat part of the screen and looks like just a bit less than the revised Xtremeguard. It also has a much larger cut out portion on top presumably to leave the sensor left of the speaker uncovered. The Orzly comes in a box with some extra crap, but realistically is the same glass as the Xtremeguard just costs a lot more and takes forever to arrive. 2nd and last time I buy Orzly as I have since found Xtremeguard which makes comparable if not better glass and ships much faster and customer service is great.

Couple of pictures to give you an idea. I took the pictures on some lined paper so you can see some of the size difference.

How well did the new Xtremeguard Revised adhere? Have any feedback on it?

Holy fuck, this still isn't out on Verizon? And the Play Store is still out of stock? What the fuck?

Amazon has all models on pre-order if you don't mind waiting a month. When they put it up near Christmas every model was listed for $599 mistakenly and quite a few got their pre-orders in. It's fixed now though.

Honestly like you I was expecting all models be in stock by now. I followed the release like a hawk and was disappointed by the release. Didn't really felt like putting effort towards spending $750 but now here we are...

Hadn't occurred to me till I saw it asked and unanswered elsewhere.
On VZW, if they never officially support the N6, what are the odds of it ever being
able to do simultaneous voice and data? Many devices have required an update to enable it.

Latest rumor is VZW is dragging its feet with Nexus 6 until mid-February.

Not surprised between their own device and the supply issues I guess.
Long as it gets there..

just placed an order for a 32gb white (for use on VZW) on motorola's website, expected delivery date is january 20th. looking forward to it. goodbye, iphone, and good riddance.

Hello I just got the Nexus 6 tonight, rooted and installed TWRP now. Gonna install my first ROM now, just a stock tweaked ROM to start off with Franco kernel. Couple questions please;

- How do I enable Double Tap 2 Wake on the phone with the new ROM and Kernel ? For Franco does he have an app I need to download from the Play Store to active the D2TW ?

- And how do I enable the Notification LED ?

For kernels or ROMs without DTW there's an app in the Nexus 6 development forum. Franco has his own configuration app that is fairly well worth the money, but Franco stock is pretty damn good.

LED, get thee to Light Flow pro on Play. You'll need to set it for root for everything and direct access inside the apps settings. Note, any time you flash a new kernel you will need to wipe Light Flows data and cache.

Dumped the iPhone 6?

Nope, this is for my Wife. I traded in my OnePlus One and old HTC One M8 to a guy on Craigslist, for a brand new in the box unopened Nexus 6 with a new case he had too. And worse case if I start hating my Jailbreaked iPhone 6 Plus, then I'll go to the Nexus 6.

So VZW customers dont have to wait for it to come out on verizon?

nope. only one version of the phone, supports all bands out of the box. if you don't have a nano-SIM from verizon on your current phone, it's a bit of a dick around getting one activated for use with the nexus, but i have an iphone 5s so it will be a simple SIM swap. simultaneous voice & data do not work currently, is the only issue.

I've been using the Nexus 6 on Verizon since November.

Due to the design of the radio (ie. only 1 radio rather than 2), I do not think we will ever see simultaneous voice/data on VZW for the N6.

They swap to using voice over LTE for the single radio phones, my Droid Turbo is the same way, got the update a few weeks ago so voice/data works now, long as you have LTE anyway. It's an imperfect solution imo but it does seem to work. It's supposed to be "HD" voice too fwiw when on LTE. What concerns me is if they happen to decide NOT to actually sell the N6, it's doubtful they will ever push a VOLTE patch or whatever for it, and even if they DO sell it I'm not sure how they will go about patching just the phones being used on VZW, it was a full on, though small, OTA update for the Droid Turbo to get it working. It's a big deal for some people, the voice and data at the same time. I just consider it a step backwards not having it.

So the one on the motorola website will work? Is it a specific model? I have the S5 but i think i want to switch to the Nexus 6 and was waiting for the N6 to come to VZW. Im sure the one from Verizon will be cockblocked in some way or another.

All Nexus 6 units are the same hardware...US variants and world variants have a slightly different set of radios enabled. ATT units have a tramp stamp and some extra firmware bits and SIM lock

Otherwise all N6 units are identical.

SIM lock = don't buy a N6 from ATT as it will lead to extra hassle.

I bought a Sprint N6 from Best Buy because I grew impatient. Worked out of the box with a SIM swap. However, I'm pretty sure you can get a 32 gb N6 from either the Moto Store or Play store right now.

Last time I looked the Moto site only listed the 32gb version, hope that isn't a sign of things to come.

The franco app as the D2w built in or you can download a third party activated one
