I divided my 120gb hard drive into 2 partions a while back. Installed XP on C: and the D: served as the data drive.

I want to merge C: and D: since I'm reinstalling everything from scratch. I was able to delete the D: in the XP setup. This became unpartioned space. I want to delete C: so it will become unpartioned space as well and I can create one C:

When I go about doing this I get an error message that says I can't do this because there are setup files on C: needed to install xp

How can I get one C: drive back? TIA

download an old DOS boot disk, put fdisk on it, and boot with that.

then just remove any partitions.

but don't create new partitions, let the xp installer do this. that way, you're sure not to put the wrong filesystem on.

Problem solved. It turned out that I couldn't boot from the CD because my keyboard didn't get detected on time. Right when you see the screen 'press any key to boot from cd...' and I would just pass through that. I disconnected the keyboard from the USB drive and put on the ps2 connector. I booted from the CD and installed everything the way it's supposed to be.

Thanks guys.
