why do my dual monitors show the same image?

I have my vp171b hooked up to my 9800xt's DVI and my Sony g520p hooked up to the D-SUB and they both are showing the exact same picture at the exact same refresh rate. I though in the ATI control pannel there was an option to make one the primary and one the seondary monitor?

edit: i have installed the drivers for both monitors and am using the 3.9 cats.
 
Somehow you have it set to mirror the primary monitor. Try going into the windows display properties and selecting "extend my primary desktop" radio button, that may work. Also, may I suggest investing in a good multi monitor manager program such as Ultra-mon
 
awesome... that did it for me, thank you very much. and yes, with all the praise it has gotten here I plan on buying ultramon. one more question, even with the drivers installed for the LCD it still shows as a plug and play monitor, is this normal?
