I'm adding 512MB memory to my 600m and I'm trying to decide whether to go with ddr pc2700 or ddr pc2100. The prices are similar so... will both work? If they do, will there be any difference in performance, or any reason to choose one over the other?

So will pc2700 not work? I can put pc3200 in my (desktop) system and clock it down to 2100 if I want. I also believe if I put pc4000 lets say in a dell with 533FSB it will clock it down to 2700.

Are laptops different? Will the pc2700 just not work or will the dell clock it down? Is 2700 higher quality? Would there be less errors? The timings are more aggressive on the 2700 but I'm not sure how it works with laptops.

DDR ram will run at the speed of the lowest common denominator usually. (So if you have a setup of PC3200 stick and a PC2100 stick, both stickk will run at PC2100 speed) (If you have two sticks of PC3200 but the system buss can only support up to PC2700....then the ram will run at PC2700).

So Yes, PC3200 will run perfectly fine at PC2100 speeds.

I just put in a stick of GEIL PC3200 512MB I bought from newegg which brought my laptop (also a 600m) from 256 to 768MB of ram. (will pickup a second stick of PC3200 512 to bring it to a gig later when I mo cash again.) Granted the stick of PC3200 is running at PC2100 speed because of my previous chip.

Works great.
