What DVD-ROM to buy

Since they're only a few dollars more, you could go with a SATA DVD burner like the Samsung SH-S223F. NewEgg currently has it available for around $25 with free ground shipping.

Amen. I'm on my 3rd Sammy and all 3 are flawless. Good, cheap drives, and quiet, too.
 
I always get whatever deal Newegg has on Lite-On drives. $25-30 for a SATA drive with every feature (including LightScribe) and free shipping (usually) = win.

I haven't had any trouble ripping or burning anything with them.
