what CPU is the best bang for buck now?

what would you guys get if you were in the market for an upgrade? axp? a64? p4?

i'm thinking about upgrading my cpu, mobo, mem and vid card for under $500. what cpu would you guys go with right now since there's so much out there?
 
If you intend to overclock (even a little) the Athlon XP 1700+ (thoroughbred core) and the AXP2500+ (Barton Core) are your best bet.

I've had my AXP1700+ up to 1.83ghz will little fuss, I am sure it can go higher I just haven't tried and I seem to be limited by my memory.
 
In my Opinion... The A64 is still too expensive to move up to right now.. Especially the FX model. The P4's are decent performers and i love the EE version. If i was going to spend the money... You can get a Good Dual Processor Mp board for 200 and just run two 2800+'s and the chips on the market today won't catch up to you for a very long time.

Ofcourse not everyone wants to run 2 processors :)
 
I bought 2 1800+ and can run them both up to 2.4 stable with 3200 winbond Buffalo mem at 400mhz

No Doubt - An Athlon 64 3000+ system is the one to beat right now in the "Most-Bang-For-The-Buck" catagory. Unless you have money to burn or can't afford a new motherboard/cpu upgrade then the Athlon 64 3000+ would be hard to beat right now in performance per $$. $500 limit on a cpu/motherboard/memory/video card upgrade would force a XP2500 system (or less) though. A decent video card is going to run you $200, memory around $100 for a 512mb stick so that only leaves $200 for a cpu motherboard combo. An Athlon 64 3000+ is around $200 for a total of around $500 and you would still need money for the motherboard if you go the 64 bit route. A $600 limit might get you there though.
 
I agree... with the $500 limit, go for a good nForce2 400 Ultra board, and a 9700Pro if you can find it. Or even get a Radeon 9800 Pro.

nForce2 400 Ultra - $70
Athlon XP 2500+ - $90
2 x 256 PC3200 - $80
Radeon 9800 Pro - $260
